Deer season and my female being in heat had be shut down for most of November and December so I knew I'd have a little tuning and tweaking to do when I was able to hunt again. I was right....First night I hunted she acted like a complete idiot, she'd go off in the woods about 30 yards or so and them jump on a tree and start treeing. No coon 100% sure. Switched her on her way and in about 10 minutes the same mess again only this time she was half way treeing it. I shined the tree and squalled ...100% sure again no coon. I grabbed her collar and sent her on her way and she took off hunting again, made no effort to go back to the tree she was on like she knew good and well there was no coon up there. Shortly after that it started pouring rain and with the night already going the way it was I headed home. I hunted again last night..same song and dance at first. 30 yards in the woods and jumps on a tree. After a little lesson with a switch we moved spots and turned out and yet again she jumped a tree. When she does this she doesnt open, trail or anything just jumps a tree and blows the top out of it. So yet again I get her and send her on her way. She hunts out about 150 yards and starts opening and working a track what sounded like half way decent. She trees at about 440 yards and sounds like a pro doing it. I am thinking to myself, finally...she's getting her head back on right. Off through the woods I go to find a tree about as big around as my leg and 25ft...you guess it, nothing. I don't get to hunt every night or even 4 nights a week like some of yall do so I know it will take some time to get her back in tune but it sure is aggrivating me. I'd be disgusted with her if I didn't know she could, would and has treed coons and looked good doing it. Anyone ever have a dog do something like this? Not sure how long I will put up with it.

Dogs is dogs and they act crazy sometimes. They all have good nights and bad. If you seen her do good work, just keep hunting her when you can. Good Luck

How old is she ? Were you doin anything different before you laid her up ? Shootin coons maybe ?

probably treeing opossums and knows better than to tree on the tree its in ,I have seen a lot of dogs that were semi broke do this just falled treed , look all around it wont be far, stop squalling at trees

3 years old, not really doing anything different I can think of. I don't usually shoot a lot of coons and as of late haven't seen one to shoot if I wanted to lol. Heard someone else say not to squall the trees, what's the reasoning behind that ? Not being smart just curious I have not coon hunted all that long

I've seen some dogs that would tree too quickly if not hunted enough. I would keep her in the woods as much as possible.

I'm sure this will get a harsh reply , But I do not ever squall when I start shining until I'm ceartin that there is no off game or for sure slick tree ,if there is a possibility of a hiding place then I will squall sometimes . Usually I can always find a coon without squalling since we have these high powered lights, when you start squalling the first thing that goes in your dogs head is yes I got it and my master is happy and I done my job , just like when you get applause or rewarded for something you have done .Only thing is most dogs are smarter than the owners lol best of luck and this is just my opinion

I bought a male dog last year that did the same thing. Blow up on a tree 30 or 40 yards in. Wore him out time after time with no change. I was at the point of killing him knowing that he was a "coon dog". After begging from previous owner not to cull him, I took him to the vet. Thyroid was bottomed out. 1.1. After getting him on meds he totally changed. Now he is about 90 percent accurate. You should have her thyroid checked. This thyroid problem is a lot deeper than heat cycles. I truly believe that a dog that has a low thyroid can not smell properly. I have more than one thyroid dog and my buddies have them too.they all do not perform when thyroid is low.

Nothing wrong but some hormone issues after being in heat. It will straighten its self out.

My female acted the same way after every heat cycle or even being layed up for a while. As she has gotten older she has gotten better about it. It use to take almost a month of hunting before she was back to treeing coons consistently. Now it's just a few nights. Keep hunting and sending her on when she pulls up short.

She was around 4.She's 6 now and takes maybe 2-3 nights after she's been laid up for a while. It was frustraiting when she was younger. But she's a nice dog and I just stuck with her.

Well, I hunted again last night or tried to. Same song and dance. About 40 yards in and she's grabbing trees without ever opening on a tract. Did not squall on the tree, switched her and sent her on. She piddled around in the woods for a few more minutes then started the same mess again as I expected only this time with a brush pile around a dead tree that was about 12 ft tall and big around as your arm. Loaded her up and moved spots, yep you guessed it. I'd had about enough after that. Lucky for her I've seen her tree coons and move a track like she should or we would be parting company. I'm hoping her heat cycle in December has her off course and this mess will pass. In the past I've had her jump a tree real quick on a first drop but very seldom and certainly not ongoing like this has been. I told myself this morning that I'm going to give her to the end of our kill season to get back in gear. Would it be worth a trip to the vet to get her Thyroid checked? Someone also mentioned turning her loose on a caged coon and see what she does. I'm not the least bit excited about having to show a 3 year old "finished dog" a caged coon to get her back in gear but if I thought it would straighten her out I'd probably do it.

Sounds like a squirrel I have seen several do this exact same thing especially if you have squirrels around.

Take her out in the daytime to check on the squirrel thing. And don't be one of those that is afraid you will break her of treeing if you lite her up on the tree.
