Armadillos

Our mountains have been over taken by armadillos the last couple years. They've got every creek and river bank borrowed up. We see them every night hunting. Well my stupid dog has got a liking for them them the last 3 weeks. Have never had to deal with them before. I guess typical trash breaking works? Any tips.

And why the h*ll are they here? Lol.

Where do you live? We have had them for years. I once meet a few men at a hunt that had never seen them.

I live in the mountains of South Carolina. They've always had them south of me. But they just hit the hills I guess

Middle Tennessee

The 1st one killed around here was about 10 years ago. The guy was going around showing a picture of it. Nobody believed he killed it here. Everybody (myself included) though it was a fake.

Now days you don't think anything about it when you see one. They are not thick yet, but not rare either.

They are the most worthless creature known in the coon hunting world. Coon Dog Cocaine they are. So easy to get a hound hooked on and very very hard to get off of. Sometimes the normal shock collar or other correcting will help curb your problem, but the real hard truth is its never going to be totally fixed. Let another dog start running one in a hunt and before you know it, you have to start work all over again. Some hounds will never stop running them while others never start. There are some harsher methods that work well, but they take time and you run the risk of he problem becoming worse, but in my opinion nothing is worse than a dog running these things. When they start on the dillos here, they are normally sent to someone up way north where they don't have the things. That same dog becomes a winner up there and is considered the deluxe coonhound. OOPS, they come back down south to a large hunt and they still have a blundering dillo running idiot. only real cure for dillo running is when they pass on. That's the only way you know for sure they won't run them anymore.

We have them here and I have never had a dog that would mess with them. Don't know why but thankful that they don't. Know that I said that the next one probably will! The critter that we have to deal with here that we didn't use to have is Hogs!! I have one hunting place that is flat covered up with them it is crazy the amount of hogs that are in the woods. I was grown before I saw the first hog in the woods here.

Because you hunt the hounds of yesteryear. The hounds back then were so much better.

Sorry Robert, I couldn't resist.

Armadillos are here in southern Illinois also.. ive seen two live ones and several dead along the road..

They are thick here and have been since I can remember. I had dogs that would mess with them years ago but I can't remember the last time I raised a pup that would mess with them.

Thanks for the replys

I think what has got me aggravated with these things is that I thought I was done with trash breaking. I've broke this dog of deer bear hogs and possums. And now there's 3 or 4 dillers on every spring head in every holler. And of course that's where we sending the dog looking for a coon on the now infested creek banks.

I can guarantee those dogs of yesterday if they ran somthing they ran to catch if they were barking they were running somthing not the smell of each other's dookie hole in front of them and if you had a diller dog you had a problem after they learned how to turn them upside down and kill them.

A guy brought a dog down here a few years back that LOVED them. He killed and ate several while here. Pretty sure the dog was a winner up north and I know the guy won a bunch...including the World Hunt a few years back.

I take it you never dealt with a porcupine.

Porkies take trashing to a whole other level. If skunk smell makes you gag and puke then skunks would still be a distant second on the, "what a freaking mess scale."

I live in Texas where we have plenty of armadillos. I bought a nice Mr. Clean female out of Nebraska. She was a coon treeing fool until she discovered armadillos about 4 months ago. She's just about worthless now.

Posted by DJames on 02-02-2017 11:04 PM:

We have them here thick too but i guess ive been lucky. I have had most all pups i start run them too but i just shocked them if i knew for sure they was after one and i always shock mine for treeing in the ground. Aint nothing good comes from dogs treeing in the ground anyway. In my experience of over 40 yrs hunting, 3/4 of the time if treed in the ground its off game such as possum, armadillo, coyote, fox etc. Even if its a coon i shock mine and it has not ruined my dogs. If a dog goes in a hole and gets hung then youre in trouble so the easiest fix in my area is to just break the dog from treeing in the ground. I have been doing this for years and i have no problems with my dogs running armadillos.
