Coonhound paralysis....
Well I came home from down south last night to find my 2 yr old Bruiser unable to walk... Took him to the emergency vet and they ruled everything else out... He caught/ killed a coon on the ground 13 days ago and got bit in the face. My friend that was feeding him said he was acting a little slow to move in the kennel for a couple days( about 9-10 days after the coon encounter). I have him inside where its warm, he is eating good, and walking with some assistance...
The only med they gave me is Rimadyl to help with pain and inflammation. I sure hope he gets better- he is a coon treeing machine and I hate seeing him in this condition!
Is there anything else I should be doing to help him out? I read the other thread on the main forum page and that had some good info

My Nitch Shorty was at the vets clinic for 31 days. They gave him thearapy by put him in a sling and setting him in warm water makeing him do swimming motion with his legs. He got awhole lot better but they never get completely over it at least mine didn t. He can t take the heat of the warmer mths. Still the same coondog he always was.Hope to hear of yours doing better.

NURSE HIM BACK, VETS AND MEDS WONT HELP, MAYBE A LITE DOSE OF PEN-G 3 ONCE IN A WHILE TO HELP PREVENT ANY INFECTION, TURN HIM OFTEN AS POSSIBLE, I FILED A WELPING BOX WITH HAY SO HE COULD LAY AND NOT GET BED SORE, COMMON SINCE , MINE TOOK BOUT 2 MO. AND THEN HE CAME BACK AND MADE GR.NT, ALSO MINE CAME DOWN ALMOST IMEDIATLY WITH THE DESEASE.

Thanks for the replies. He continued to worsen until he couldn't walk or even stand, and has been the same for 3 days now. I have him inside in a plastic kiddie pool full of hay, he seem comfortable now. I carry him out at least 3 times a day. He still is eating good. I am still hoping he turns around

Hoping he recovers for you.
update
Well its been about over 3 weeks, and he still cant walk, but his legs are getting a little stronger. If I lift him up him up, he can stand longer than he could last week. The biggest improvement is his voice- he couldnt make a sound, but now he is getting pretty loud. I hope this is a good sign

thanks, everyone- last night he took several steps unassisted, and this morning he walked for about 20 yards before his legs gave out! I am very happy!!

After nearly 2 months, Bruiser is doing much better. I still have him in a heated porch but he spends a couple hours in the yard every day. He is walking good, but still has a little stiffness in his rear legs when he runs. I am planning to take him on a short hunt in a couple weeks.
Wow I am happy he is gonna make it....
