Iowa Coondogs of Old (1980's)

Anybody remember:

Bodenhofer's Fleetwood Sam (Walker)
Platner's Blue Mash (Bluetick)
Daniel's Willie (Walker)
Chainsaw Joe(Walker)
Bandit (Black and tan)
Big Creek Spud (Walker)
Daniel's Stonie (Walker)

Some pretty tough dogs back in the day.

I remember Larry Platners Mash one of the better blueticks of that era Larry was first class too
Daniels Willie and Stonie Terry had some good females before that too
Everett Smiths Diamond handled by Charlie Berry also Spud that he owned with Jerry Johnson
Kenny Stogdills Bill dog was nice
Dave Carlsons Thunder
Rick Goode and Rex Krough had some good Blue dogs
Pat Shelladay Owned bandit
there was a Redbone called river Bottom Trooper think Dale Slaughter had him
Ralph Huisman and Roger Johnson packed some good walkers
GL Ray had Galloping Pinhead
Garnett Gordon had some good black dogs
English Richard Johnson, Kurt Nickell
I won a little with my black dogs I was master of hounds at quite a few hunts back then too remember a lot of the guys and their hounds I could probably come up with quite a list if I took the time
I went to zones inLegrand last two years and didnt know many of the guys there did have nice visits with Terry Daniels both years

You guys remember "He-Be-Jamming"? If I remember right, he died young, chased one in a drain tile I believe.

another good one that probably is unheard of was Slife's Lucky, a walker dog owned by a young guy from I think Independence or Olwein, iowa.

Denny Kirby hunted some very good blue dogs. I remember a pretty good and consistent winner, a Black and Tan from some guy named Fred from St. Olaf., this dog ended up being barred from UKC due to fighting if I recall.

Not sure if this was 80's or 90's but there was a Clover bred walker that was sweeping the Iowa hunts

Sam was as tough a hound as i ever hunted with. Todays hunters would love him.Turn 4 dogs loose 3 would go one way and Sam would go the opposite and end up with a coon I couldnt stand the way he hunted but he was 1 of the3 best i ever hunted with.

I got a chance to hunt with Dolan and Pat Shellady one nite. Old Sam really put it on Bandit. He took a track off the river and treed it while the Bandit dog was still trying to trail along the river bank. Then Dolan cut Sam back toward Bandit, and sam took the track away from him again and treed the 2nd coon. He was a very nice track dog.

Old dogs

I hunted with many & competed against most all dogs listed since starting competition hunting in 1970. Back then you'd have 80-100 dogs at a hunt on Sat. night, with maybe 25 reg. dogs & the rest were grade dogs.

Dolan/Susan Bodenhofer- We raised our families together from 70 to 90's hunting several nights a week together. He had a great little cur female named Kate in 70's up to the great Fleetwood Sam dog. I won my 1st Johnson tracking system with him in 80's by winning the pts. hunts the Iowa State Coonhunters used to sponsor.

Larry Platner- Hunted with/against old Mash several nights. He could tree any coon track he ever started & didn't know what pressure was when he got treed. Actually bred a super nice female, NTCH LIL (Kirbys Spike) to him & had her killed 2 nites after going out of heat in a conibear trap. She was 4th in $KC state standings in early 90's. Mash sired Slifes' Rambo & the rest is history.

Mike Wagner- Chainsaw Joe was another super nice walker. Too bad he was sterile & never sired any pups. Mike & Larry actually hunted against/trained those dogs against Sam, just to see how good their dogs were!!!

Joel Ernst- He Be Jammin was a nice young dog that Joel did lose in a field tile in Illinois, when he was still young. We actually lost him earlier in a cave one night after swimming the river, but was able to find him wiyh beep/beep & got him out. Dolan & I gave Joel a ride to Coletta, Ill. to the 1st nite hunt he ever competed in, when he was in high school.

Bob Henning/Ron Potter- He brought the Chief dog to Iowa & put a lot of 'tree power' in the red dogs back then. I loved the Tonto dog he had back then.

Brian Wessel- Casey was the talk of the area, when he started hitting the hunts. He & his off-spring was highly competitive in area for years. I actually minused Brian on the 1st nite hunt he & wife ever attended for stricking my dog on cast!!!

Terry/Barb Daniels- Had a lot of good walker dogs thru the years starting with the GRNTCH Dot female, if I remember right, to his UKC World Champion male dog. Lots of young guys got started in competition hunts handling Daniels' bred dogs.

Denny Kirby- Can't forget him before I stop. Kirbys' Spike sired a lot of good blue dogs, starting with one of the 1st crosses made by Ron Garbes. There could be several Spike sired dogs at a hunt on any given night that could win their cast. At one time, I believe Denny had 5 GRNTs' tied in his yard. I had 2 really good ones out of Spike- NTCH LIL & GRNTCH Rolin Blue Patience (Squeak). Then, Denny brought Moss Creek Trader up to add a little more 'grit' to his line, along with a walker female from Indiana. He wanted to be more competitive in the $KC hunts & the rest is history- the HALF BREED dogs were started. I've always wondered just how much money (4 wheelers) the HALF BREED dogs have won thru the years!!!! LOTS, is all I can say.

Time to do chores & besides, my finger is getting sore from all this typing. Take care, Ron.

I remember one night hunting with both Larry and Mike. For some reason it was just Mash and Joe as my partner and I didn't bring any dogs...not sure why though?!

Anyway, regarding Fleetwood Sam, I distinctively remember Larry and Mike saying something to the effect of "just when you think your dog is clicking on all 8 cylinders, take him over to Dolan's for a litmus test and hunt against Sam...you'll quickly figure it if your dog is -there- or needs some work yet"

That Anamosa coon hunting club had some TOUGH hombres. Went to several club hunts up there and the competition was always fierce. How many eastern iowa hunting clubs are even left?

Just the Anamosa club. Cascade started a club in early 90's, but rest have folded up thru the years. Legrand is still open. Decorah/ Elgin has hunts in old Postville area. Tipton, Manchester & Coletta are all long gone.

My name is Ron Behne from Bernard. Have hunted blue dogs since early 80's. Take care. PS- Just remembered, I still love Barb Daniels' raisen pie that she would bring to hunts. Had one again last fall from zone hunt. Thanks Terry/Barb.

Yes Pat I am Jim Max P and I still laugh about Bandits little slip up in the early morning at the Washington B and T sectional

All these posts bring back great memories lots more dogs at hunts , hunted three hours rather than 2 it was usually daylight when I got home not sure how I hunted some of the Friday and Saturday night hunts and worked almost every Saturday

Prarie Creek Blue

Glenn Exline had a real cooner in the early 70's Prarie Creek Blue. got to hunt with Glenn when I was working in Iowa in 75.
he also had several others that were sure enough cooners.. one he called Rigamortis that he sold one night while I was with him.
If memory serves me right he was president of BBOA at that time.

I used to think a coon dog was a coon dog no matter where you went. I went to SE Iowa a couple weeks ago and found out different. Took a dog that was a pretty good dog here and was made look foolish by some local dogs. My dogs are used to looking for A track and then working it out. Way to many tracks there for that style dog. Local guy had a dog that could care less about tracks on the ground and was just looking to get treed, and tree he did. He would tree a coon then go 50 yards and tree another. Made mine look silly.

You guys are way too old. Lol

was the dave guy from oelwein Dave swanson I know him and junior lenth had some nice walkers back in the day

Man that's a blast from the past reading this old post.

Junior Lenth had a nice little walker gyp he used to bring up and hunt with us youngens. Never a dull moment with Junior in the woods, lots of great memories.

Starting out in the world of competition hunts back then you were educated really fast. Lots of great dogs and handlers to learn from that's for sure.

Never hunted with the Casey dog but a buddy of mine had a really nice gyp off him that I spent a lot of nights in the woods with. Hunted with Buck 2 a few nights when he was a pup, Myers might of tried him. Got to hunt with a few others like Dales Zip dog and Schotts Rachel dog but missed most of those older dogs.
