how long to wait to hunt a dog
So i recently got a dog out of Oklahoma. Hes a 5 year old male and i was told hes a great track and tree dog and his best attribute was his locating. So i kept him in the house for three weeks to get use to me and listen to my commands. In those three weeks he seemed to be a perfect dog would listen to every command i gave him.Even took him to a friends farm to train a couple pups on a caged coon, called him in and told him to load and he did it all with no problem. BUT i took him out last week and the dog took off, never opened up didnt even hear a bark. i had to pick him up from the shelter 5 days later. ive now had him for a week. how long should i wait to take him out?

Could be your problem....? Unfortunately if you took someone's word on all that; he just might not be all that.
my grandfather hunted with the dog and he came from a family friend that's the only reason i took the dog without seeing him work personally.
I guess you don't have a tracking system? I'd get one and hunt the fire out of him.
5 year old dog , you shouldn't have to wait ,, cut him lose again , how that saying go ,, If you love something set it free if it don't come back find another one

Bought a six year old female last year on trial. Hunted her three nights the first week I had her and she hunted like a dream. Has ever since.
yeah im a young guy and right now a tracking system isn't in my budget. I plan on taking him out friday and see how he does. other wise he might be going back.
i bought a dog in the spring that treed 4 coon in less then 30 minutes so i bought him right there. got him home and he did nothing but slick tree for about 45 to 50 days. I called the guy getting worried i had been had and he kept telling me keep hunting him thats not wat this dog does. And all of the sudden he decided to start treeing coon and been a real nice dog since. i think some dogs just take a while to adjust.

I would say if your Grandpa hunted with the dog and said he was a nice dog chances are he probably is.
The coon may have not been moving so he may have went deep until he found one. Those are the kinda dogs I like but you definitely are gonna need a tracking system for those kind of hounds.
