Question-8 minutes

Dogs A,B,C, are on the lead. Dog D was last heard deep straight North. Handler of dog D opts to walk his 8 min North the last direction he heard his dog deep. Handlers A,B,C do not want him to walk his 8 min in the direction his dog was last heard deep. They say it's against the rules. Keep in mind, the other three are on the lead. Folks, I thought every effort is supposed to be made to score a dog that gives honest effort to tree a coon? Not make every effort to keep from scoring one. What happened to good old fashioned sportsmanship and common sense. If I had to win by making an effort not to score another mans hound that had a coon treed. I'd quit coon hunting. I like to sleep at night and I have to look myself in the mirror in the morning.

I was on a cast one night a few yrs ago, guys wanted to walk to hear their dogs. We walk way up the road toward em. They still wouldn't start the 8. Said we had to go back to the last place we heard them. Which was probally a half mile back to the truck!! Wasted 1st hr of the hunt. So I could see it both ways

It's not a question of starting the 8 the 8 was immediately started first.

no where in the rules does it say you can't walk. it's his 8 he can walk. And you do need to go to the last place you heard a dog to start the 8 or a reasonable distance.

It's always been my opinion to go back to area where dog was last heard opening then start the eight. I would even close the gap some if it took a while to score previous trees. But I am not a big fan of walking to dogs that can't be heard opening. Simply because am not a fan of leading my dog all over the woods for no reason!lol as far as I knew I nd I may be wrong but I was pretty sure that a cast doesn't have to walk to dogs they can't hear.

We wasted about 40 something minutes of hunting time. I'm all for being fair but a man should take his minus he deserves and go on with the hunt

It was stated in the original post and repeated again later that the 8 was already started .

No.

Two different discussions going on.

In the case above the 8 was already started. They can walk the direction the dogs went out of hearing.

You walk back to where you last heard the dogs BEFORE STARTING THE 8 if the CAST walked out of hearing of the dogs, in the event of a split etc. and you had to walk away from working dogs to go to a tree. You can't then start the 8 at the tree, you have to walk back to where you last heard the dogs and start the 8.

The cast has to make every reasonable attempt to hear the dog. If you walked away from the dog the other direction to score the other dogs tree you go back to the last spot you heard the dog. Start the 8 then if the handler wants to walk in the last direction you heard the dog your walking. If the hunting judge or other cast members refuse to walk we are going back to the club and they gonna have a short night. Cause now we fall back on another rule because if they do not want to walk to make every attempt to hear the dog they are trying to gain undeserved points by getting you minused. Rules state make every reasonable effort to hear the dog. Refusing to walk is not making a effort.

The Ms. State Hunt was ruined for me by three grown men who didn't know the rules, that love to argue and bicker one that wanted to circle a slick bush and one that wanted to connect a tree to another tree to another tree to another tree to a tree with a coon in it, that was nothing short of something you'd see in a Tarzan movie. Then the three go deaf I get minused then they get cut restruck and miraculously they regain their hearing and hear my dog treed I had just been forced to minus both ways strike and tree. Then one goes blind when we get there can't see my coon one walks 30 yards from the tree with his light off and won't shine the other guy does see the coon but at that point hunt was over doesn't matter I just gave up and circled it. I was nothing but fair with these guys and anyone that's ever been judged by me will agree without having even been there. Anyone that knows me will tell you I'll minus mine without blinking an eye. Bottom line too many people in the hunts do not know the rules period! I'm disgusted and ready to quit.

i just didnt see it in the book or advisor and no i was talking about walking to dogs that can't be heard. Thanks for pull in that up for me . Like I said earlier I would have went back to the last spot and walked in the direction of the dog.

I don't have the advisor with me, but I'm pretty sure now you are permitted to use your garmin to find the direction your dog is and walk your 8 if the whole cast agrees. In my opinion, if you can not hear the dog and you do not have a garmin to pin point what way you need to go, the cast should not have to wLk aimlessly around the woods to maybe hear it. I think you guys are taking the " make every attemt" in your benefit.

No they are not. Read the official interpretation. The one with the 8 running can walk in the direction he thinks the dog may be, or up to the top of a ridge, whatever he thinks will bring the cast into a position to score the dog.
