Is this what he's been doing ever since he started treeing, or is it something he started doing lately?

If the former, just tie him at every tree, and knock a few out to him to start. If the latter your gonna have to let him know we don't play that game......just enough to get the point across to start and consistently amp it up if needed to a full out hat whuppin or ear twist all the way back to the tree. Obviously you could also incorporate an E-collar if the dog knows what it should and should not be doing.

I don't let a dog that previously was doing what I want, decide to make a game out of being sloppy. They can choose to go backwards, but there is consequences and if they have any brains they choose the easy way over the hard way.

Now add this: Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens.

You are right, I would start off by tying at the tree and put some fur in his mouth and he should start locking down tight, They are one thing to look at though if it is as dry as it is here that could be adding to the problem or causing it, When you have had no rain in months and it is real dry it will make a real good dog look bad .
