? On buying a new coonhound.

I bought a coonhound that was guaranteed to hunt. She came from a different state. She is 6 years old and had only one owner. Suppose to tree coon like crazy. So far no coon and no trees. Will tree fir about two minutes and leave for a different track and tree. She left 7 trees last night. How long can it take a new coonhound to warm up to a new owner and land. Has anyone had this problem before we're they wouldn't hunt at first but than cones around. Or should I give up and send her back. Hunted her five nights so far with not one stay put tree or coon. Had her for just over a week.

I'll bet he has some excuse to not take her back. Keep us posted on how this works out.

How did she look when you tried her there?

This is very hard problem to correct exspecially at the dogs age. Have you hunted her with another dog yet?

A older dog that has been with the same owner all its life can take a lil time to warm up to u. I usually wait 3 days until i cut one the first time. Get the dog out in the day time just to walk around. Might take a hot dog down and feed it. Anything to make the dog feel better. Become the dogs friend in these 3 days. We just bought a grnt champion pkc silver champion with 12k won. Up their the dog looked good got him home and for the first 2 nights he wouldnt go huntin!!! After a couple nights of that we started whoopin his a$$ now hes back were he was when we bought him. Sold another one to a guy for $10k and when he got home he was sick. Called 2 days later hateing the dog. He wouldnt go huntin and this dog was a big huntin dog. I told him to lay him up for a few days and the hot dog trick. He called back a week later loveing the dog. Said 20k wouldnt buy him. Dogs are funny. Most the time though they dont want to hunt. Never seen one leave trees cause of handler change. Could be the dog had the problem to begin with.

I once sold a dog that hunted great at my house. When the new owner got her home, she would not go. She ran back and got under his truck. I made the trip up to his house and went hunting with him. She went back to the truck. I went back to the truck and got her and cut her again. She went hunting and did fine after that. I guess that she just wanted me to say that it was all right. Dogs are weird.

If you take a dog that is real accurate in thin coons to a place where there are a whole lot of coons, they will check and keep going on. It will take them awhile to get used to all of those tracks.

I've seen what Richard is talking about. I've taken an excellent coon hound from eastern NC to the upper Midwest and had the exact same scenario happen on the first night, she never settled on a tree that night. The next night and the following nights she was herself and looked good as always.

I bought a 4 yr old female that had lived on the same place her whole life. From the time I loaded her up til 3+ weeks later she acted like I beat her- she would hang her head every time I went close to her. She finally came out of that, and acted just fine. She just didn't warm up to me very quick. Ole hoss gave some good advice- give it a little time.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge a dog. If a dog has been hauled and hunted all over the country since an early age then they should take right off. But if an old dog has been hunted in one place all of it's life then you might want to give it some time.
Some people are more trusting than others and will give a dog time to adjust. Others automatically think that they have been "taken" and won't give a dog time to adjust. Everyone has different standards.

I've had first hand experience in the same situation. I bought a female once, she was a little under 2 years old and I took a friends word on this gyp. I really wanted her bad because she was out of my good female and I wanted something to carry on with and this little gyp was supposed to be really clicking. Well, I bought her on their word and gave a pretty good price for her. I'm telling you, she wouldn't do anything, hunt alone or in company, tree alone or in company, I mean nothing. I hunted her for a couple weeks and was ready to choke my buddy for lying to me. He swore that she was really doing a great job and I knew him well enough to know he wouldn't lie to me but still no results. Going into the 4th week of owning her we took her out one night and she went in there and treed two singles and never looked back. Now, that being said, I wouldn't get too excited till I hunted her a spell. Get her used to you, that is VERY important! I never sell a dog without recommending at least 1 week of socializing before hunting. Not all dogs are the same, just like humans but if this dog was a one owner I would give her a little time. If she doesn't pan out I'd say you may have been taken, I hope not.

Another case was when I sold a very nice female to a person and after 3 days he returned her and said she wouldn't do anything. I advised him not to hunt her for a while after he took her home but he didn't listen and hunted her the same night he bought her. He said he couldn't get her to do anything and brought her back. I returned his money and advised him that he just blew one heck of a deal. She was a solid cooner and I made the decision to keep her and we did until she died. Patients means everything when it comes to coon hunting but in the end, it's your decision.

Friends don't let friends hunt blueticks

Female not hunting.

We have hunted her five times since she came her 10 days ago. Every drop she goes out hunting. Tracks awesome. Will tree great for about two minutes than leaves again to the nextent tree. I pet her give her a good rub and talking to morning and night at feeding time. Loves attention not scared of us. We let her sit last night and going to try tonight. She just loves being in the woods just won't stay treed. Haven't even got to any of the trees to see I'd she had a coon up them. Haven't ran another hound with her yet. The gentlemen will exchange her idmf she keeps up. She has always been owned by a male. Know she us with my daughter and I. Female handlers.

Be careful if the guy you bought her from is willing to exchange her for another dog. That's an old dog trader trick, take the dog back and for an extra $ 100.00 he's got another dog that will make you happy. The problem is that new dog is no better than the one you just bought and when you take that new dog back to exchange it, he'll have another dog for a little more and it goes on until you give up and you have lost your money and time. If the dog is as friendly with you as you say, at her age hunting with someone new isn't going to bother her if you have no problem catching her in the woods. Take her back and get your money back, waiting for her to start treeing in my opinion is a waste of your time. Wait to long and you can kiss your money goodbye if it's not to late. I think he will have some excuse as to why you can't get your money.

II'd take it back and have the owner go hunting with you . if the dog will operate right for him probably good dog. If not get your money back if you can. Most important thing is never trust a dog trader especially one from Ohio named Carson, one from Oklahoma named Robert or one from Missouri named Rob they are all snakes.

Never trust a coonhunter! Best advice I ever got! 90% of them will pawn junk off on you and not loose a wink of sleep. Just ask Jeff I've slept good lately!
