What to pick?

Coon hunted 30 years but never tried to train one from a puppy. I am thinking about trying and was wondering which line/breed might be best for first try. I am color blind and don't competition hunt so I want to know which will hunt honestly. I have lots of good places and only thing I care about is accuracy.

I would say a cur or a leopard dog would be a great place to start.

30 years an you haven't trained your own dog???
I've heard it all now!
There's nothing like a young dog doing something in the woods for the first time.
I've been coonhunting for 25 years an I've trained all of mine.

Mel, I think you could teach us something. Most on here seem to be hopped up competition kind of folks with all the answers.

Tell us a little about your hunting. You go a lot or three or four times a month? What breed of dog to you favor? How old and what breed of dog are you hunting now?

SERIOUSLY, I think we could learn from you. Most of us would say it seems strange that you hunted for 30 years and haven't tried to train a pup. Or had a buddy train one while hunting with you. Lot of times but not all the time, I have found guys like yourself having a pretty nice dog. Sometimes because you don't hunt with a lot of other dogs, your dog may be a little grouchy with other dogs. Nothing wrong with that if the dog is your only dog and your hunting alone and having fun. Please no disrespect by that, just want to lay ground work for a pup you get. Do you think the dog your have now would be a good dog to work a pup with?
I have several friends in KY that could probably point you towards a pup.
I see over the years you usually get a 2-4 year old dog that was already hunting. A little background on that and how that has worked for you would also be interesting.

Appreciate you sharing with us. Please don't take my questions or any responses to your post in a bad way. We can get feisty on here but first and foremost I think we are trying to help first.

Thank you Conkey. I have been blessed to have good luck with dogs. The fist one I ever owned was given to me when he was 3 and lived to be 14 and hunted well until the last 6 months. I have only owned 3 other hounds including the one I own now. The other two were bought around three years of age and lived long lives. I haven't tried to raise a puppy because of limited time and when I had the time I wanted to hunt not deal with training. I have a little more time now. The first three dogs were walkers but I am hunting a redtick now. I put the question forth because not being a complete hunter my exposure to different dogs is limited. Some breeds and lines in those breeds I am sure lend themselves to easier training. Some dogs require a more experienced handler.

I meant for that to say a "competition" hunter not complete hunter.

I think the dogs you and I both look for actually need a less experienced handler. Show them the woods, show them some direction when they are not living up to your standards.

Thank you. I am looking to train one myself for the first time. I was hoping to find some advice on breed and line. You ask bird hunters you always get the same answer for first time dog (shorthair or lab), but I am not getting the same kind of response.

Lets be honest most dogs that folks say they have trained couldnt be given away to a top tier trainer. Training is more than getting a dog to tree heck thats already bred in them. Jmo

I agree they all have treeing instinct. There has to be a difference in how some lines take to training. Are some naturally high strung or easy going? Do they take discipline well? Are some natural trashy and have to be broken of it? I just put the question out there because there seems to be a wealth of knowledge from some seasoned guys on here.

Mel within a litter there is gereraly a difference in how the pups will act. Then within the breeds there are differences in how the pups act and look. Most find a pup from a bloodline the favor. Then pick one from the litter and dream a lot. I know what bloodlines I feel fit my personality but hard to recommend a bloodline for someone else. If you like your English dog find a pup somewhere with that bloodline.

As i tell anyone looking for a pup or young dog, Do some research on the type of Hounds that tweak your interest and fit your hunting style and then find people that are hunting that line or breed of dog close to you and go hunting with them and see if that is what you are looking for, If not start over and hunt with the next one on the list, If you do not narrow your search down like this you may go through a pile of pups and never really find what your heart was set on to find to start with, If you do it like this all you have to do is then find a pup from the breed and line you chose and put the time in with the pup and hope for the best because every pup and dog is different no matter what breed or line they are from, The best of luck on your Quest .

Thanks Jim for the back up. I was beginning to think I was some kind of freak. Thanks for the advice Mr. Taylor. I will take it to heart and start doing some looking around.

Training dogs ain't for everyone. Most just ain't smart enough to admit it lol.
