Coon Clubs...

How do you guys get people to come out?

I started a club up 2 years ago and it was doing great! Had about 3-4 cast at every hunt, club hunts were doing great, meat hunt bringing in lots of cash, concessions booming.

Then, we found out the Treasurer was pocketing the money, all of it, and the account was in the negative. This guy was such a narcissist he had over half the club convinced the money was not stolen and in his "Money Bag" instead of in the bank. Long story short, They barred me from the club I started. I believe now that there were several splitting the money and they wanted me gone and off the bank account.

A year later some members noticed money was not adding up. Same guy was now president and at it again (if he ever really stopped). Even benefit money for St. Jude and a memorial for a guy that passed away in the community was never donated to the right places.

A Few of the members (maybe 5) got all bank records and everything they needed to get him out. Now that he has gone, and taken his "crew" with him it left very few good members. I was asked to come back and help but I don't want to get caught up in all the mess.

Officers and members are getting discouraged that no one comes to a club that has such a bad reputation. On top of it all the former president and his crew are threatening, vandalizing and telling the community and other hunters not to go back.

Really want this club and it's members to make it. At least get back to what it used to be.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

That's always miserable get all your members together explain things to them and tell them that it won't be fixed overnight you are better off right now to have one big well put together hunt a year than a bunch of small ones use all your efforts to make that one hunt a success advertise, get people to call venders get stuff donated. Get the wife's to put together a good kitchen raffle off cakes , pies and things don't have a free moment without somthing going on give a big prize for high scoring dog for combined two night score so they have to hunt both nights and last but not least y'all might have to share the expenses on the first one to make it happen but just have fun you got yadkintars recipe it will work because that's the way we did it back in the day.

If it can be proven by bank statements or deposit slips that anyone embezzled money, the only thing to do would be to discuss the matter with your local DA and see if he will pursue criminal charges. If people realize that y'all are trying to clean house then maybe the club will once again thrive. May not be a popular course of action but its the only right thing to do. If a guy is willing to steal from me, then I'm willing to see him punished. Good luck

Great Idea! I will bring this up at the meeting on Monday.
We have had pretty good community support but hunt wise hardly anyone shows or you have the same people and same dogs every time.

Not all members want to press charges. We have voted on the matter. They are afraid everyone on the account will get charged and not just the one that stole it. Some knew it was going on and didn't say anything so they are worried for themselves also. It's close to $5000 that was stolen. I have no knowledge of any legal actions that can or have to be done but wouldn't be opposed to speaking with someone if I had support from the other members. I was not affiliated with the club when they caught him the second time.

We tried to just let it go and not have the drama or worry but he and his crew are still threatening to shut the club down and them open a new one. UKC, PKC, and CHKC know about it and who it is so I don't see that happening.

It's time to do what Terry Dye said and press charges. In my opinion when you fail to press charges it might give the impression that all the talk about stealing money from the club is that, just talk. $ 5,000 dollars is a lot of money just to let someone take without a fight. If one person had the checkbook, that person should be the one facing the heat. If he is threatening the club, it might be to scare everyone into not pressing charges, which works just the opposite on me, I'd press charges just to prove to him that I don't scare.

I would offer a free hunt, sure you have to pay ukc fees. Run the kitchen on a donation only. Raffle off a nice prize. Most importantly have the club members and officers introduce themselves, state your goals as making the club a top notch club again. Advertise the free hunt and raffle.

I'm with you on that! But Lord knows I don't need any more drama. I will suggest it to the club and hopefully can get through to them that it needs to be done. I've thought the same thing about people thinking it was just "talk".

I like it! Just with the donations you are more than likely going to do fine! Also this may encourage more pleasure hunters that don't comp hunt to come give it a try!

I mean no disrespect to you by what i am about to say, You must be more man than i am because they are no way in Hatia i would ever go back there much less help them build it back up, I would set and watch it crumble down behind me first .

As for the ex members doing what they are doing and what they have done that is a matter for the Law and Courts to handle where you want to do it or not and if you don't stop them they will just bully people and members until the Coon Club shuts down anyway so the best thing is to nip it in the bud before it blooms .

I didn't go back at first. But there isn't many good clubs around me. Plus I enjoyed being there before it all went to hell. They did ask me and my husband to be officers. We said no. I also thought we could get it back to where it was if we keep the bad apples out. They are bullies! And most of their wins are not won fairly.

Remember if you press charges it's the DA that handles the court case, you shouldn't need to pay for a lawyer. The DA does all court case when someone is charged with stealing you just need to take out the paper work against the people that took the money. I would bet when they are served with papers the money might just show back up. They will not want to take the chance on being convicted plus they will need to hire a lawyer.

We will talk about it at the meeting. It would be nice for the club to get their money back. And hopefully bring back a few people that said they would never be back.

Thanks for all that had input!

Some of the club members and officers decided they didn't want to press charges. Not what I thought should have happened.

I would love to say your club is the exception, but it sounds like the majority of the clubs in central Il. The clubs only draw 5 to 7 dogs total.
