Bluetick male is sick and I'm looking for input.

A week ago Fri. I went to hunt my male dogs that's 23 months old. When I got the lead on him out at the kennel he headed for the gate pulling like normal but started coughing and I knew it wasn't right. I have him a shot of penicillin right then and took him to the vet the next morning which was last Sat. He had already lost some weight by then too. The took his temp(102.5) vet drew blood, checked a stool sample and also done a tick panel. All tests that have been ran come back negative!! I bring him back home with doxycycline 2 times a day with a meal. Problem was no matter what I fed him he wouldn't eat. So by Tuesday he has lost 15 pounds and back to the vet we go. They admit him and start a fluid i.v. then. By Thursday he's gotten a little bit better but not want we want to see so they started him on steroids too. Thursday around noon he decided he was hungry and are his first meal since the previous Fri night but hasnt eat again since then. The vet called Purdue university and talked to their vets and they said to start him on panacur right away. I guess panacur has multiple uses?? So now I'm waiting until Monday to see how he does. My heart is aching and my mind just keeps going through everything. I hunted him the night before he started the coughing and he treed two coons in nice style like normal! Im just shocked that he's lost so much weight so fast and nobody seems to know what is wrong. Hoping maybe someone has input or has seen what I've tried to explain. Thanks to all who take the time to read this post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want my buddy back...

Had a dog run a 5 inch stick under his tongue one time and you couldn't see it. Just a thought

Is he moving okay? bloated all all? does he hurt anyplace? Just found my hound to have a hernia.....

Rapid weight loss always makes me think of an aggressive cancer of some sort.

Have vet do x-ray of stomach and intestines. Might have ate stuff and got a blockage. There could be a bunch of different things to cause the symptoms and weight loss.

Thanks everybody. I hadn't thought of a stick or anything lodged in his mouth or throat so that's something to look into for sure. The vet said no to cancer. He also done an xray of the stomach and intestines and even sent it off to a specialist. Xrays looked good other than he was just completely empty. No blockages and no hernia. He is moving around good other than I can see how weak he is getting and he was starting to have trouble with his balance. He had been an extremely active and healthy dog since I got him at 3.5 months. It is unreal how fast he has went down hill with not even an idea of what is wrong because every test they've done comes back negative. Thanks again everybody I appreciate your input.

Maybe bad bag of dog food. Try frying up some hamburger with egg in it. Add a little pancake syrup for some energy boost, or honey. I had similar issue you are having. Several years ago. I am confident it was the dog food. But try the above recipe for a few days to help get him some energy back.Good luck, keep us posted on how he is doing.

Also make sure he isn't dehydrating. You will need to get some electrolytes in him immediately if he shows signs of dehydrating. Pull the skin at the back of his neck to see if it snaps back in place. If it doesn't or is real slow to return to normal he is dehydrating. I have used Pedialyte to help with rehydrating. I would suspect the panacur may cause some dehydrating in his current state. Keep checking his hydration by the back of the neck skin test. Also keep an eye on his gums. Real red gums shows he most likely has a fever. Real pale gums I usually suspect blood worms(hooks, whips, pins),or possibly anemic.

Since no obstruction or folds in his intestines and tick panel came back good although depending on the stage of the disease lymes can go undetected. You may also have them check for blasto the cough, lack of appetite and fever are all symptoms, treatment would include an antifungal. Does he have any skin, eye or urination issues?

If a dog drops that much weight that quick and they run that many test and never found the problem i think i would go to a different Vet, I am mind bogged on the Panacur to if he never had worms or they was using it with the Docxy, I would have a Xray done from nose to stomach he may have swallowed something that punctured or hung up in his Esophagus, I hope you find the problem and he recovers soon .

I have multiple dogs so we ruled out the dog food. He's been on an iv off and on because he was tearing it out in the middle of the night. I stopped by the vet Fri morning and I could tell that he was definitely a lot more hydrated than he was on Tue. His eyes looked better too. By Tue the skin in his ears, nose and his under side was all dry and peeling. I had seen him drink plenty of water over the weekend. I have even been putting the electrolyte and vitamin mix in all my dogs water this summer. Giardia is what the vets at Purdue wanted to give him the Panacur for. I've been going to this vet since I was a kid and I'm now 35. I fully trust him 100%. This is the first time he's had a dog that they just can't figure out. I'm leaning towards a stick or something stuck under his tongue or esophagus. That would be painful enough a dog wouldn't eat. I called the emergency number this morning and ordered them to do Xrays of his head and throat. Hopefully we find out soon. Thanks again everybody. Have a nice Sunday

Redneck Mafia suggested checking for "blasto". Have they checked for Blastomycosis? I would agree on checking for it. It has been known to be a hard issue to diagnose. I was also thinking " Distemper", but surely was one of the first things they tested for. Please keep us posted. Some very useful info may come from you and your Hound. Best of luck with your Hound.

On the first visit when his temp was 102.5 the vet said a tell tail sign of blasto was that the dog will have a temp of 104.6. He did test for blasto and that too was negative. My vet said by Monday if he doesn't improve enough he was going to refer me to another vet. He has talked to pro ably 10 other vets and Purdue and they all seem to be stumped so far. Thanks for the continued input guys. Hoping it gets figured out and he gets better. Maybe this will help someone else one day

So the panacur seems to have done the trick!! He has ate 3 1/2 cups of food so far today and is drinking plenty of water now. The vet tech I talked to told me that he started barking at her when he was done eating lol I'm guessing he feels lots better now. Thanks again to everyone
