Ratskin to a Ranch

When I was a youngster growing up near Devine, TX, there was an old store in the middle of town that had everything imaginable in stock. It was where the hub of activity and their slogan was, "Everything from a Ratskin to a Ranch". Join us as I return to the home ranch and my hometown and see how things have changed. I will be hunting my hounds with the hope that I can tree a coon in one of the old historic live oak trees where I had treed a coon or bobcat as a youngster.
Adios,
Gary

Best of luck on this hunt. Hope things have not changed all that much! Maybe pick up a rat skin or two- kinda make some interesting conversation. LOL. Dave

Ratskins are quite a novelty but don't keep you very warm in the winter.

Devine now has a Wal Mart which helped to kill off the Mom and Pop businesses and today you have to lock your doors. Glad I am 170 miles further north in the big city of Menard, population 1,500...no Wal Mart and still don't have to lock the house.

Gary

Ah one of a few benefits of getting old ( 68 in Oct ) is not having to spend the next 50 years facing all these " new benefits". About had enough for one lifetime! LOL. Sure do miss the family type business where you were more than just a customer. Dave

Hope u have a nice time and see some coon.
We had a general store with a little bit of everything (including farm machinery at one time. We have an old sickle bar mower that my husband's grandpa bought there when my 85 yr old father-in-law was a boy.) a mile down the rd when I was growing up. It had an old coal stove in the middle of it and benches on each side of it so the old guys could BS in the mornings. It burnt down...not because of the coal stove though. The owner's daughter was burning paper behind it, thought it was safe to leave, but the wind picked up and that was the end of that store. There's another one about 15 miles from here, if the owner doesn't have what u want, he'll try to get it.

Gary your TV Show is really frustrating me. LOL For the past few weeks I have been out of town or busy when the show came on. Well I have it set to record and each time I have sit down to watch I could not find it. Well this morning the same thing. Could not find the show. Well after scratching my head I figured out the PRIORITY of the show to record had been moved to the bottom of the list and was conflicting with something my wife has set to record. Well I have that fixed for now. Maybe she won't figure out what happened to her show. lol

Saw it. Great show. Loved how the dogs acted around dead coon. Good shooting. Brought back a lot of memories from the simple days of just running and treeing them.

Thanks, Bruce. Notice that I don't ever use a leash, I never tie them back except on a lion which is for their safety and I train them to be called off a tree. I hate trying to catch and lead dogs from a tree, I guess I am just lazy.
In the episode where my wife killed the lion, I did not tie the dogs back because the lion kept jumping. Snow was deep and I did not want to get any further from the truck.
Adios,
Gary

great episode gary, by far your best imo. i know its not the "cool" thing right now but if more had one hound let alone a pack trained to hunt for you and handle like that a lot more time would be spent in the woods. also the day running shows how trash broke they are. nothing funner than hunting with others while you walk your dog or multiples off tree by voice while they are getting drug around on lead. i wouldnt trade a hound hunt like that for the biggest buck or bull elk hunt anywhere. good stuff! later, matt.
