Looking for best coon hunting trip location!

I am looking for the best place, most likely some sort of public land, to spend a week coon hunting.

Looking for some place with tons of coon, preferably flatter land, and easy access. What parts of the public land are the best to hunt?

I've heard White River Refuge (Dale Bumpers White Water Refuge) was some of the best coon hunting out there. If so, where are the best places to hunt out there, and best time frame to go.

Thanks for the feedback!

South unit of white River. Dec 1st. Heaven on earth for a coon hunter

Just pull up and cut a dog any direction you want.

Coonhunting Trip

How far you willing to travel? Michigan has a very healthy coon population (No Snakes with Teeth ). We have tons of public land. Also how big do you want the coon to be farther North u go they grow to the size of Cub Bears Combination of flat lands, river bottoms, swamps, and farm ground.

@highridge What dates can you coon hunt the south unit Dec 1st until?
Any recommendations on where to stay cabin rental/campground or just a hotel close by.

@tony.beals. I've hunted in southern Michigan before and the hunting is definitely top not, any public land in Michigan you would recommend?

I'll check into that! How many a night do you normally tree out there?

I'm from Alabama where the coons are thin, so 2-3 in one night is a real good night here.

Posted by high ridge on 09-05-2016 02:45 AM:

2-3 here. There you can tree as many as you want. I have had bad nights with dens and slicks and good nights with 12-15. One group at the camp treed 21 last year in one night. Had em stacked up

Lots of Public land in North East part of lower Penisula but also have Porcipines too deal with and bears, big coon up there thou. Hunted till 4am last night treed 3, but seen 12 in 1/4 mile stretch of fence rows. On the river floating i'v seen as many as 30 in one night

How are the wolves in the u.p now? Like everyone has stated white water refuge is nice. It can get crowded at times in places due too the dates there open

Posted by joey on 09-05-2016 06:32 AM:

You are 7 hours from white river. Keep an eye on the water, if its ok then go. Its not just the hunting, its just different. We used to take a boat in there muzzle loading. I would be in the stand and feel like I was the only human that had ever been there. I have never had a problem running in to anyone during the week. Lodging is a problem because there is nothing around there. If you have a camper you can take it in the refuge and use a generator. Or you can go to merrisach lake and they have a real nice camping area with electric, water, sewer and clean hot showers. Make sure to bring a 4 wheeler and check the regulations for them.

Wolves

They are still an issue, they had a hunt but did not meet their quota in a few areas. Spent 4 years in stationed in Alaska never seen a wild wolf, heard them but never seen them. Spent one week in UP deer hunting and had one come with in 30 yds of my tree stand, he looked at me and just walked into woods and started howling and two more joined in. Pretty animal and neat to see and hear. However I know the issues with houndsmen with hounds.

Some of White River Refuge was under water recently and will have a negative effect on this Years population.

Michigan Hunting License

Forgot to add Michigan base license is $151.00 year, $80.00 7 day, Furharvesters $15.00. Base license is a small game license. On a side note excellent squirrel hunting for those that have squirrel dogs also. Combine coonhunting at night and squirrels in daytime. Coon season opens 1 October and goes thru end of January. Squirrel is 15 Sept and goes to 1 March.

I Thought so Too

But confirmed in regulations that it states same dates as residents now. I know it used to be they could not hunt or trap until the resident trapping season started. Page 46 of regulation is where to find it. Also trapping season starts October 15th this year a big change from years past.

Down here in Russellville. But,I have treed several in your country some nights. Eugene Pepper farm was lousy with them at one time. We can tree 2-3 most nights if you stay out after them.

I go up to Mungo State park every year. Hunting Licence
$35 for 5 days. More land than you can hunt. On the pigeon river. We stay in Howe IN. About a mile from the Michigan line.
Love it up there, plenty of Coons. Easy walking. Plenty of hard woods.only fault is weather is under predictable.

roadtrip

I've hunted all around the upper midwest going to breed days for last 40 years & can just about guarantee great coon hunting population in all states N of the Ohio river. Hunting license fees & when seasons for different states are open would be the 1st thing you would need to check on. Take care, Ron.

Posted by STROKIN on 09-09-2016 10:44 PM:

Take Tony Beals advice. He lives in the best coon hunting in the world IMO. I used to hunt the maple river when I lived up there and no better place as far as the amount of coon. Take a couple days and hunt in the northern part of the lower peninsula. Jumbo coon. If you like to hear dogs everywhere then hunt white river.
