starting/training pups without old dog

Whats the best way to start pups without turning them out with an old dog? I've heard several folks say that starting pups with old dogs will make them lean on other dogs too much, makes sense if you think about it. Just curious how everyone likes to start theirs.

Find a heavy coon area or feeder bucket. Take the pup. Sit down on a log and play on your phone. They'll figure it out lol.

I don't agree that starting a up with a broke dog is bad. I started all mine with other dogs and single them as soon as they tree one their self. Some were independent and some less so but I don't believe how I started them was the determining factor.
I can't advise how to start one alone because I never have but I know that plenty do it that way successfully.

Just walk them in the woods and enjoy ,, no need for old dog ,, it takes patience , but just encourage good behavior and discourage the bad , if you see one up on a tree ,, go pet the tree and praise them

Starting a pup with a broke dog works fine, but not everynody that thinks they have a broke dog actually do. And not everybody even has a semi broke dog. I knew a bunch of guys in school that had a young dog and thought they needed somenody to hunt with and thats just not true. The old dog isnt teaching the young dog anything, theyre just kinda showing them when to do what they already know how to do. The dog should have it in them to do it naturally anyway and if they dont the old dog isnt gonna do anything for them. Like was said earlier, have a corn field, creek bottom, feeder bucket, or something that (not 100% guarantees a coon bcuz that doesnt happen) has a pretty good likelyhood of a coon being there most of the time, and let them do their thing. Its not gonna happen instantly but if they have it in them theyll do it.

With an old dog ,make sure its good and good for pup training,too many aren't honest about the old dog and probably do more harm than good!!................... with the pup alone, its natural trashiness will probably be more likely to come out where as if its with a good straight dog it will be less likely to take junk...... eventually that will show but hopefully after they are more established at the right things! Main thing is get them out and where there are coon, once they are started goodies them where there are least coon to finish the job!! And in tough conditions, and remember we aren't training them. WE ARTE GIVING THEMTHE CHANCE TOLEARN AND DEVELOPE!!! GOODLUCK AND DONT GET MAD!!
