walking bear
A walking bear does just that "Walks" He doesn't tree and he doesn't bay up..Most of the time it walks faster than a man can go through the woods. This is a hard bear to kill, unless you've got roads that it will cross. Some know better and won't go near roads. If you put in a real gritty hound he may bay up or even tree....
Thanks for the answers. That's about what I figured but without ever bear hunting I didn't want to assume anything.
Walking bear
This bear is a real bear hunt!
Walking bears are great for culling out those wannabe bear hounds. Lol. If you've ever been close enough in there when that rank son of a gun stops and faces off with your pack it'll make the hair on your neck stand up. It'll get eerily quiet for a bit before all heck cuts loose

With good bear dogs there should be no silence unless there mouths are full of hair . walking bear are my favorite so are the mean one's . years ago I would get on a walking bear or mean one and I would say well this is gonna be a long day and we are not treeing this one . that is no longer the case . 99% tree them . although vet bills are more common now days .

So a good bear dog should not get a mouth full of hair? Smarts and grit are a necessity . being smart about when to get a mouth full is what I should have specified . one ****** dog won't do the job I am talking about . put 3 to 6 on it all of same caliber some amazing things will happen that never did before . most guys have a dog or two in there pack that they think are gritty or tough or whatever . you will here them say well I wonder what that bear would do if I had six of my ol hank dogs on him I bet it would be a different situation . well it is if you can do it.

if a dog pleases you in the way it hunts bear thats what really matters.i personally want hounds to bite enough to stop the bear without getting stove all to pieces.if im stapleing a hound once in awhile thats just about the right amount of grit for me personally.i also like hounds to work as a team to keep each other alive when a bear does get a hold of one.its nice to have the pack bite imediately to help the caught hound getaway.i think good bear hounds learn how to handle diffrent bear and terrain ,and play a fine line.

Terrain
Down here on the coast we are both cursed and blessed with Carolina bays/poccosins. These areas are the thickest of the thick, briars, pea vines, ironwood plants etc... A laurel thicket in the mountains is a joke compared to these areas. My point is that for us here in North Carolina a dog's true grit can only be seen in the bay. Not to take anything away from Idaho dogs, but chances are those six super gritty dogs would be destined for disaster down here. It's hard to bay what you can't see!
I understand thick brush . but how do you get the bear to tree or move on if the dogs are not baying or pulling hair? Do you just gather them up and move on? My dogs get tore up pretty good when we get one in the real thick brush . but they push them through or Tree . it's like have a bull brushed up . your average cow dog isn't gonna get him out . we sent some dogs over your way to a man named John broadHurst he is originally from England . he hunts with a group of plott guys . when he hunted those dogs with them they were very impressed .

FYI
Unless you have been in a Carolina Bay, you have no idea what it's like.
I haven't but my dogs have and are .

Sweet!
sweet!
Thick
I have been to nc to fl and any where on the coast of nc is just like south ga and fl. thick is thick swamps is swamps . anyone from coast of nc or south ga or fl knows excatly what thick woods means. I know John from england I've got to hunt with him a few times he's from nc and has hunted in fl. He knows what thick woods are for sure. Nothing better than to hear some English guys talk about bear hunting. Awesome
i live and hunt western north Carolina and also hunt eastern nc the bear down east are an entirely different animal I don't care what you put on them if they don't want to tree they wont. Ive hunted out west and up north too but if you want to see the baddest bears in the country head down east.
eastern nc have the baddest bear in the country ive hunted out and up north. I live and hunt western nc but down east is where the bad boys are. If they don't want to run walk or tree they wont.
North west coast is the same I have heard . the kamphouse dogs come from there and are doing real well in east Carolina. I don't doubt the density of brush . but just because you guys haven't seen it done how I am talking don't mean it can't . I am sure you have heard of it being done but you just don't believe it . them boys I know over there are killing 600 to 750 pound bear over there east Carolina every year .

I have ran bear in numerous states in various terrain. In my experience dogs that put up a high % in certain areas can really struggle in other areas. My success rate in most of the areas I hunt is over 90% if my dogs are in shape. The brusher and steeper the country the more my success goes down. A 175 lb bear on the ground is the most dangerous bear in my opinion.
