Stewart's Tree Smokin English
Why is it that people still think its all about the stud dog when the female has alot to do with the breeding program as well, just bc its a world champion doesn't mean the cross is gona make a good one its still not all about the stud's

Josh don't take it to heart bud but the English guys want to be like the Walker guys .take for example do you think when people breed females today they actually do the homework on the blood line to make a good cross? No most do not .are they honest in the hunts and can proudly say there dog won it honestly? No most are not .are they gonna quit doing this and ruining the hunts and breed for our young ones? Not a chance.

Not all about the stud dog
Sir you are correct with your statement! Sorry for jumping on your post but wanted to share this to all new breeders and old .
I heard many yrs. ago from some old time coonhound breeders i won’t mention names but there theory was that the percentage is very simple when your crossing coonhounds to coonhounds the pups will either carry 50 % of the fathers genes or none same as the female 50 % or none and there on including grandparents and great grandparents but anything after the great grandparents is most likely o% of their genes will be passed down to the pups. Bottom line is if you have 2 individual’s that they have the desired traits that you like and you breed them together you have a better chances of getting what you are breeding for is as good if not better. (Right) but if you are solely re lying on the stud dog to produce you a litter of above average coonhounds your fishing in the wishing well without the female matching up to the traits you want in your pups your chances are a lot lower of getting above average hunting dogs . So I would think the better your female is that is carring the desired traits that you want to enhance in your pups then you will get a higher percentage of that litter of pups that can run and tree coons like you’re breeding for.
My dad always said if we are going to breed for dogs we will breed small dogs they don’t eat as much!!
Food for thought!

If your saying ancestors or bloodlines have zero impact, only the parents impact the litter, I agree 0% with that statement!
50% or none
Rob please read post again let me rephrase my meaning.
there theory was a pups gene makeup is either the good or bad traits come from the Sire which = 50 % or none the Dam which = 50% none and the same goes for all the ancestry back to the third generation after the 3rd generation most likely will not impact the pups = 0% so short term speaking there is no part this or part that 1/4 this or 1/4 that its 50% or nothing of either one of the 14 dogs which = a 3 generation pedigree that's what I was told back in the 70s maybe there is more updated facts somewhere I don't know. this is my last post.
again sorry to jump on your post!

The female plays the biggest part of it, but again its a 50/50 chance too get what you are looking for and then you have too hunt the hair off them to see what you get !!!

A couple comments
One thing I can say for sure is that breeding top dogs is not about mathematical formulas.
Another misconception is the idea that a top reproducer will consistently throw pups as good or better than himself. I've never seen any "outstanding" coon dog that's ever done that!
breeding
I agree with all of these comments to some exstent but the fact of the matter is that if we are gona continue to produce great hounds then we gotta stop thinking about money and start thinking is this cross really gona do good bc as soon as you breed your top male to someones female and the pups don't do good then it gives the stud a bad name, and it could have been prevented if only there was a little research there like a hunting trip with the female to see her traits. This is just common sense to me but thanks everyone for your input and keep those English dogs in the winners circle!!!!
