I have a 6 week old Mt Cur pup. Does anyone know how I can cut his tail without taking him to the vet. ?????

At that age, I would take him to the vet. I know folks that have cut them off at that age, but I wouldn't do a dog like that.

The OMCBA breed standards say : NATURAL bobtail or medium length well feathered.

A castrating band will do it but I haven't ever tried it on a six week old. I put them on 10 day old pups and the tail falls off in about 3 days.

Post this on rabbit hunting forum. Alot of beaglers are docking their beagles tails at older ages do to being tore up and infection. The guys i know personally use a castrating band then follow up with penicillon for a few weeks to cut down on infection. I havnt seen an issue yet but keep in mind that these guys are taking 1/3 of the tail not all of it

why not leave it as is, folks didn't used to bob the mtn curs tail.if born long stay lone if bob when born ok.thet didn't really get into docking tails until the unknown ? funny looking curs started showing up.I'M READY, LET IT FLY.

I would use a castration band. Just go to your local feed and seed or tractor supply get the bands and a bander. I grew up hunting and trialing beagles. I got into tree dogs and didn't have time for both. Some beagles tail would get so beat up it was necessary to remove a portion of it. I have docked tails on 6 year old dogs. Pull the hair back, or trim it where you want to place the band. I would always wait five days and cut the tail off right behind the band with a sharp pair of scissors, and then flip the band off. They won't hardly flinch. If you don't like the idea of cutting it you can just let it fall off. If you choose not to cut it, it will take a little longer, cutting it will relieve the pressure of the band and they will be acting like nothing ever happened later that day. I guarantee you the vet can't make one look any better. The hair will come back and look great.

If it were mine i would leave it but the thing is its not mine and this guy wants it removed and he is asking for help in doing so not opinions on if he should or shouldnt take the tail off. The castrating band works well with little to no pain. Good luck with your puppy

Opinions

The opinions are just that, "opinions". I understand his question about docking, maybe he hadn't thought of leaving the tail intact. I don't have a dog in the hunt, just agreeing with what I thought was a good idea. If he wants a bobbed tail dog, I have nothing against it. I cut tails on JRTs , but at an earlier age. I have docked Mt. Feists also. If I were to raise Mt. Curs, I would consider leaving the tails. I have a Mt. Cur and it has a short tail, I think it was born that way. His pup, and he can and I am sure will do with it what he deems fit.

The worst sound I've ever heard is a tail beating the inside of a dog box !!

Rhythem, lets you know that he or she is happy and wants to go hunting. Just like anything else, people have different desires. Personally, I like em both ways. When you get older as I, and can't hear anyway, the thumping won't matter. ha Have a very good day
