Red, amber, green?

I was thinkin of gettin a new superior bushwacker. Im savin pocket change in a jar now lol. Moneys tied up. My buddy ronnie has one and i like it. And like him i want 2 modules the same color. His are red and he swears the red is the way to go. Says coon cant see red. But i tend to disagree. Cause i can get any animal to chase a laser pointer. I was leanin toward amber cause thats close to a old style wheat light color. And i feel i can make out stuff easier. And i like green. Maybe convienent that green is my fav color lol. But also im one for tryin to keep my night vision. I like to be in the dark. And feel red and green is good for that. How does everyone feel bout how coon react to these colors? What are your opinions or advice?

I have the Sunspot Horizon,,it has a white flood L.E.D. Light for walking,,and it has the red L.E.D. flood for shining coon eyes,,and it has the green L.E.D. flood for walking when all the bugs are out,,and believe me,,it helps a lot,,I love all 3 lights colors,,best light I've ever owned,,I've had many coon look down at me using the red light

Personally I prefer Amber I have red now but don't like it as much coon eyes definitely pop but I like walking and shining with Amber never used green but hear it keeps bugs away.

I can find coon eyes better with my old light i got now than the white led. Its like the led is too bright and they dont wanna look. But i use the old nite lite wheat on low and il find em. But i dont have much experience wit the different colors. I feel the amber is the closest to the wheat. The red is hard to make stuff out walkin round. Does the amber make theyre eyes pop more or just as good as the red? Will they look at one more than the other? The green i feel i can pick stuff out better than the red walkin round. But will coon not look at it as much? And hows theyre eyes pop wit it? And out of the 3 which allows you to recover ur night vision quicker? Cause i only use my light when i have to or shinin a tree.

I've always found coons look better at the red, I can't see fur thou most times with it I've used the white LED or the amber to find fur. Tried the green some but can't say I've found much use for it myself yet

I walk with white. Bugs get bad I switch to amber.. with amber eyes are yellowish orange. I also use red to shine some. Clearly it makes the eyes pop out at ya more than others but it Messes with my eyes in the process. Ive tried green and blue also. They are not for me.

I have the Bushwacker from Superior with two whites for walking and one red for finding eyes. I think the red is best for eyes but not the best for walking with. This time of year the red does help with bugs but green is better to walk with and works as good with bugs. All 3 would be great if it was an option. Still my pick is red. If I need the white to walk with I'll just have to deal with the bugs.

Why the 2 whites for walkin? My buddies one white is plenty to walk wit. Plus the one on the belt. From my understandin tho the other 2 modules u cant switch between. They both turn on same time? But can switch from the third white one and his 2 reds.

I bought a new head from Conkey's and really like it. It has white, red, green and amber LEDs. Its not so bright that the coons won't look. And I've found it depends on the coon if it will look at the colored lights.

I can tell you my experience and the research I did. Animals have a harder time seeing the red light spectrum, but they can see it. Amber is part of the red spectrum. Animals with night vision can see the green light better then any other light.

There are a couple of moths that seem to be attracted to the red but I have only seen them a few times. The little gnats that are around low muddy water love a green light but go away if you switch to the red. The same moths that come to the red also come to the amber.

This is what I tell customers that ask me. I am absolutely convinced that it does not matter what color led you put in a tree if the coon refuses to look it will not help. I was shinning a coon that I knew was there because I seen him from across the field. I used a red, amber, green and low white. The coon refused to look at me. I flipped my light up on high and he was looking right at me with both eyes.

When I only had the option of one color I used an amber. It walked ok and shined eyes ok. Now that I have two colors I like a red, green or red, amber.

One white is a wide beam angle and the other is narrow. Im assuming two modules come on together on a three module setup because the toggle switch only works two ways. The two walking lights are enough for a crowd to walk with and are awesome for taking videos and pictures if you are into that. I cant see needing two reds and one white for any reason. I have found coons 3 trees away from the one being shined with one red.

Does the superior come with a option like this? Wit the 3 module option to have white flood for walking and amber and green for the other 2. And switch between em? Guess thats somethin to ask superior. Raises another question. My buddy got the 2 red cause just one wouldnt be brite enough he said. Would 1 amber and 1 green at a time be brite enough?

Superior uses a 9 way switch on the battery. 4 forward for spot and 4 rearward for side module(s). Center position is off. To cange colors you use a toggle switch on the head which only functions 2 ways. It would be nice to have 3 colors since there is room for 3 modules but the switches wont allow that to happen. I should say its not impossible but Im not a light builder. To answer the question one module of any color is bright enough. The Bushwacker has four positions for the colors and they can be low or BRIGHT.

So i guess im thinkin between amber and red. Amber would be better to see things. But wont spot eyes as good. Both keeps bugs away. Good enough anyway. But the red will shine eyes better. Just hard to see anything else.

Michael said a mouthful especially when it comes to different coons looking at different colors. I've gone thru every color on my light to get certain coons to look and "yes even the brightest white" but I really do feel the red led gets them to look more often than white or green "by a pretty good margin". After having a Horizon with red and green I would never want anything else IMO but if I were going to have just one color, I'm sure I would go amber because in my eyes it's at least second best at getting a coon to look plus it still is pretty good for walking also IMO.

What I have seen as far as getting a coon to look is that they do not like a concentrated point of light right on them. The color don't seem to matter much one way or the other. As posted, for certain if he aint gonna look then he aint gonna look. I just find that you have a better chance of getting him to look if you shine looking with the outer edge of the light instead of the dead center where it's concentrated. We used to call it "in the halo" of the light and learned this back when I used to call fox with lights. I think a lot of guys throw a big bright spot up the tree and when the coon wont look they blame their squaller.
I used a red filter and fox would come right in if I kept the center spot off of them. They wised up to the red and I had to switch to green. Green worked real good until they got smart to that to. I aint gonna lie, we missed a lot of fox we called in...
One other thing to think about is that we don't really know what they see color wise. If they do see color at all it might appear as some other color to them, just as it does to people that are color blind. I have always heard/read that animals with good night vision only see black, white and shades of gray. If this is true then a dimmed down amber should look the same as a red light to a coon???

If we were calling coons in while predator hunting all of that might be true. When predator hunting for fox or what ever the main goal is that they do not know you are there. When coon hunting with dogs the jig is up. It knows you are there and that changes the game and the way it will react to a light. I don't know what they are thinking but for some reason some coons will not look at you when you have them in a cage, they tuck their head and will not look you in the face and some turn to fight. I think its more of a personalty thing then anything else.

Yes, I agree...as I said in my post, if he looks he will, if he don't you cannot make him. Still though, gig up or not, I believe you have a better chance at getting one to look at a dimmer light or the halo of a light then you do right at a bright burning concentrated spot.
It's just like with a squaller...I have had them in a cage or in a large pen type enclosure and I have seen them jump and move in a very alarmed or nervous way, but they will not look at the source of the noise day, night, no light or even with a thermal.

When we throw out names of colors, most people see them differently. For instance AMBER. I have seen lights from orange to yellow to a warm white called AMBER. Joey explained it good on here one time using a color scale. I was hoping he would do it again but you can just google color scale and see the difference.
First the main beam of the light is generally considered WHITE but like AppalachianBlue said about finding the coon with the white. It is hard for most to see coon fur in a tree with the bright white light. Different light builders use different LED's that produce a different white on the color scale. My personal preference is a WARM WHITE which can be seen on a color scale as not white but has a tint to it and some says borders on the amber they like. Not a yellow or orange but WARM WHITE.
The secondary lights I use to like were RED and GREEN. I think Red is the best for finding coon and have for many years. The Green has been great for bugs but the depth perception of some people get messed up walking with it.
I have changed my opinion on the secondary lights and use a red and white. Some one asked why two whites. The white of the secondary beam is the cool white with a wider angle LED which makes it better around the truck and walking.
So I have the secondary white for walking. Red for searching for the coon and the WARM WHITE of the main beam for finding the coon that won't look. The warm white has the tint of lights we use to use.
Google color scales and you will see the difference in color shades.

That is interesting! I don't really see the color "green" in there. I'm guessing that would fall somewhere between white and blue? Maybe around 8000?
