White River Refuge

I know it's way early but I generally plan on one or two trips a year out of state to hunt. This year me and a buddy has white River in mind. Does anyone know when it opens and how good the hunting is normally. I've herd its paradise. Thanks in advance.

Went last year good hunting but go when ain't flooding

The south unit opens Dec 1-15 They've cut a lot of timber the last few years so it's not as good as it used to be. Try to avoid the w-ends if possible. Its primitive camping with no water or electricity, but they're cabins for rent close by.

Hunting much better after midnight, you won't hear another dog. Will get a stray dog or two at tree every once in a while before midnight. Most treed in one night was 23, least was 4. A heavy fog rolled in and couldn't see tops of trees. It's Arkansas so weather is crazy, one year was in the 20's, one year was in the 70's and everywhere inbetween. Closed last year, so if flooding didn't kill them, should be a bumper crop.

If you come to white river bring an ATV, the woods are wide open and dogs that normally dont get deep can do it pretty easy in there. There will not be any driving around to them in the truck.

TAKE AN ATV. THE FIRST YEAR I WALKED. MY DOGS GO BIG AT HOME DOWN THERE THEY LEFT THE WORLD FOR SOME REASON. AGAIN DONT EVEN CONSIDER GOING WITHOUT ATV.

GREATEST COON HUNTING ON EARTH. NO BRIARS WIDE OPEN AND COONS. I CAN ONLY HOPE HEAVEN HAS A PLACE LIKE THE WRR

I liked it 20 years ago . last two times ive been in there NEVER made a tree without at least one strange dog coming in and most times several would come in . Not my cup of tea but beautiful woods and lots of coons.

I have not had a dog come to me in years. I guess its all in where you hunt in there. I tend to not go on the weekends, that might also make a difference. Also a lot of guys drive as far as they can on the atv trail before they cut loose. Thinking they are getting away from everyone. Problem is that's everyone else idea too. I hunt close to the roads.

I hunt right off the roads and only had one instance of dogs getting together. Turned out to be some really nice guys.

We've been going for nearly twenty years. The year after Steve Fielder wrote an article about hunting in the refuge, it seemed like there were people everywhere. Your best bet is an ATV/UTV, and hunting late at night is a good suggestion for avoiding some of the pressure. We occasionally hunt the North Unit when the South Unit opens, and it feels like you have it to yourself. Everybody runs to the South Unit soon as it opens.
You can pretty well forget about it when it floods. It gets to be a mess.
And be careful to adhere to the regs the refuge puts in their brochure. There are some nice LEOs, and some not so nice LEOs. One group got a ticket for parking too far off the trail one night, and parking too near it and "obstructing" it the next. We had two ride around with us all night one night, and they freely admitted they were just waiting for us to "screw up". Most aren't that bad though.
Bottom line is that its a fun and unique hunting experience in the kind of woods you're not likely to encounter anywhere else.

Is it legal to ride atvs thru the woods or just on trails? I hunt some nwrs that restrict atvs to trails only.Thanks,Jr.

Trails only and they have a restriction on how aggressive the tread can be on your tires.
