First Ukc Night Hunt

When was your first UKC competition hunt and where?
Mine was 1965 in Bismarck, North Dakota.
there have been lots of change in the years since then in the dogs, the rules, equipment, the people that hunt in them.

Jan 1985, Jonesville VA.

I won my cast and placed 4th in the hunt with 25 plus points. I can still remember some of the details from the hunt that night.

Oh ya, I also still have the trophy!

Hadley Hills Coon Hunters back in probably 1985 or 1986. While I don't remember the exact date, I remember the hunt very well. When our cast winner got back with his 1st place win, he actually bragged about how he took me to school. The worst part of it was he told the truth of exactly what he did and everyone was o.k. with it.

Every time a dog barked he would ask me if it was my dog. I would tell him no. Then when I did call my dog he would ask if I was sure. The thing is after the first drop the other 2 dogs minused out. So it was a 2 dog cast at that point. Last drop, my dog struck a hot track and was 75 yards ahead of his dog. My dog located and he treed his dog who was still far behind my dog. I said wait a minute your dog isn't treed. He paused, and then responded he is now. He beat me by 25 points.

All the old guys just laughed at his story. That was my first and last hunt for several years until my friend Scott talked me into competing again.

1976, Clarence NY. My dog carried a possum in and laid it at my feet, seems funnier now than it did back then.

1970

Cornbelt Championship at Central City fairgrounds in March. Usually 80-100 dogs back then with 3/4 of them grade dogs. Spent a lot of money on these things since then!!!! Take care, Ron.

First Nite hunt

May of 1981, East Concord NY. Entered in the water race first then hunted a grade hound. We finished the hunt and decided to hunt longer. I think we missed the deadline by about 1 hour. Lol

86 Conway Ar, I needed a coon at the end. My dog treed with 4 Minuits left in the cast. I was 10 and the old man judging told me we couldn't score it because we got to the tree after the hunt was over.

!983 or 84. Watson, Louisiana
I was hunt the best dog I ever owned. It was a BBCHA hunt , and won King of Hunt, at less that what I remember. Ill have to check the Blue Book to verify. But I had drawn out with a fellow names J.E. Childers , hunting Skuna River Lipper, if my memory serves me correct. At that time i had never heard of Lipper. I learned a lesson that night, that I carry still today. He showed outstanding sportsmanship and was one of the better handlers that I been in the woods with. He believed in letting the dog do his thing and the handler calling the dog for what it does.

.

I had a guy come in the store a few hours ago and heard him ask Corey if Bruce was in. I went to speak with him and he asked me if I hunted in competition hunts back in the 70's, down in the southern part of the state. I said that was me and he said he had a full cry magazine he kept because his dog won second in a hunt and it showed me winning first. He said he was passing the store and saw the name and wanted to check to see if it was the same person.
Now that he mentioned the hunt I remembered it. I had a pup I raised out of Houses Tom Tom and won first on Friday with 75 plus and on Saturday had a couple hundred and won 5th. That finished him to NT CH. This guy is into Beagles now and gave up coon hunting. Small world. This wasn't my first hunt but close to it. Probably around 1976 or so. Just a short 40 years ago. lol

2006... I was 13 I believe. Entered my old Bluetick female. Drew three Walker dogs and she got eaten alive on the first drop. She had a notch in her ear the rest of her life from that fight.

The rest is history

1974

I think it was March in 1974 at Marshville WV. I ended up with 4th place on circle points. I got a trophy but no points. Didn't matter to me, I just wanted a trophy. Hunted many hunts sense then but can remember that one clearly. Drew out with a Redbone and an English. The Redbone treed off by himself and when we got there he was treed on an ole abandoned telephone pole with one of those glass insulators on the side of it. Guy said he's gonna have to quit working ole Red on a cage coon, LOL! Anyhow my dog got the only tree that night in about 4" of snow, a den. Ah, the good ole days.
