squallers good and bad?

seeing plenty of threads about squallers and i know they have their place but wondering if getting over used?

i am all about finding coons, but sure dont want to squall one down. if dog wants a coon best run one down and catch or will get a few shot down in season. get videos sent from friends all over country almost every week where dogs hardly treeing then when squaller starts you would swear they were looking at grizzly bear.

I do not want my boys to squall unless they already see the coon, i see plenty walk in to a tree and start squalling right off the bat and its slick! Just teaching the dog it's alright to pull up short.

explain to me how that's gonna teach a dog to pull up short? Also I take it you don't squall period when leaves are on. I don't see why a man would only squall after they already found the coon the point in squalling is to "FIND" the coon

i could see where squalling would positively reinforce a dog that the game is there even though its not,just like i knew a new coonhunter that would shoot up there to see if a coon would move around so they could get an eye on the coon.it wasnt long ,and his dogs were pulling up short alot .i told him to stop doing it ,and they came around after awhile.it does depend on the hound,but a hound can pick up a bad habit quick.so i would go by how it affects the dogs your running.young dogs are especially impressionable.

I have been at this for almost 40 years, since I was a kid in high school and here are some facts about coon squallers:

1. Not every coon will react to a squaller.

2. You are just as likely to get a coon to react to other noises as you are with a squaller...i.e., duck call, predator call, silent dog whistle, regular whistle with the little ball inside, rocks in a can being shaken, etc. I have had as many coon look at party horns and one of those kids rattle sticks that you spin.

3. Many coon that do react to a squaller don't do the hunter/handler any good because they jump or move around a little but still wont look. I learned this with night vision and a thermal scope.

4. There is no secret magic sound that will cause a coon to loose it's mind in a tree every time it is made, or at least the sound hasn't been found yet. If there was nobody would be on here claiming it so, we'd all know for sure if it was and the dude that invented it would not be making them himself...he's be in the Caribbean
living on his private island.

5. Squallers are important because even though they don't work every time, you only get plus points for seeing a coon and you need/want all the advantage you can get in competition.

6. Squallers first have to get people to look, not coons, because that is the only way they will ever get sold. Sellers and their fanboys will tell you anything to sell one and there is nothing wrong with making money. Who didn't buy a light with a "flutter switch" back in the 80's???

7. There are no bad squallers out there being made...this is because none of them will always work all the time and there are plenty of other excuses why it didn't...and it will always get down to: "you need to learn how to blow it better." "That coon's been treed before..." "it ain't the right time of year..." "You must have got dirt in the reed and it's out of tune..." "The call has moisture in it or it was wet when you tried..." I even had a guy tell me the coons were deaf because they lived in the woods near a big fire dept. siren.

A Rattle Box would change your theory on what Squallers can really do

I have come to the conclusion that the make, model or material used for the squaller makes little to no difference. Who's blowing it makes all the difference. So people can play the trombone, some can't. Some can squall, some can't. Ive tried about all of them. I'm one that can't.

material is everything to a good Squaller. 2nd is finding what way works best with you on blowing it. A lot of Squallers you have to flutter your tongue, but not with that Rattle Box. You can squall coons out with out fluttering your tongue

misnc..i think you have a pretty good assumption about squallers.especially no. 7.there is NO squaller that will work on every coon every time.i don`t care what kind you have or who you are.and if you don`t think it will have an effect on some dogs then you have another think coming. kinda like petting a young dog up on a slick tree.i suggest you use a squaller as a last resort and use it sparingly.but on the other hand ,its your squaller and your dog so do what YOU thinks best.

Thank you sir, it is very kind of you to say so. I agree, I have gotten the best results with squallers when I go into the tree quietly and have my light dimmed way down with either a red or amber filter and blow the squaller softly at first. From what I have seen coons respond to two different nioses...one is the scream of a coon in fear and the other is out of curiosity for a noise they hear. I think with the fearful scream you have a 50/50 chance of getting one to look. What I have seen s that it seems like the odds are maybe higher if you make a noise they are curious about. They seem to be naturally curious little animals anyway. I am next going to try two of those stupid little oval oblong shaped magnets that kids buy at gun shows and throw up in the air to make that weird clacking vibrating noise. The I will take along my fiddle...I can get anything to look when I scratch on the fiddle!!!!

Deerslyer86 not downing your squaller at all, may buy one sometime. But in "training" a young hound i do not want one blown unless you know for a fact it's there. Then we can see the wonders it will do.

that's fine, but none of mine dawgs pay attention to a Squaller. Most dawgs don't pay attention to one

The squaller that works the best is the one that YOU have confidence IN.....

I've always had good luck with the old wooden T. Ball one or just using my mouth..

Never ever liked the black Olt one, BUT after having hunted with Dlinkous lately they sure do seem to like he way he makes the OLT sound.

I agree with Msinc's accessment. I find a lite tickle on the squaller works best, particularly in the spring and summer.

Many years ago I was looking at a treed coon and decided to PLAY with it with the coon squaller. After really getting down on it a second coon in the same tree climbed down and jumped, the coon I had been watching NEVER MOVED!

Right now with kitten coon moving its almost automatic to get a coon to look with a squall. I'm not really seeing the correlation between slick treeing and squalling

True story...I got stopped by a game warden the night I was playing with the party horn and rattle stick. Now seriously, the last time was 20 years ago!!! I hunt by myself a lot {imagine that} and I came out to a road and didn't have my dog with me. He was going by and saw me and stopped. He didn't notice at first what all I was carrying. I showed him my license and then he saw the party horn and the rattle stick and kind of looked a little funny. When I explained I was trying to see what kinds of noises coons would look at he shook his head and got back in his truck.

I dont even need a squaller. I'll see most of em without one. I would like to see 6 out of 10 squalled out though.
