Cur Training Question

I have a OMCBA male that will be a yr old in a couple weeks, he is started and can tree a squirrel if he sees it or if it is a really hot track like one running maybe 50ft in front of him and he doesn't see it. this pup has been doing no more than this for a while and barks up a lot of trees but will not stay. If he was one of my hounds he would be in trouble but im new to this curdog game and not real sure how long I should keep hunting him and hope it works itself out. He may stay at one out of every dozen trees he loads up on, any advice is welcome. Thanks

Scott, you mentioned hounds so I'm guessing you have trained or guided a dog in the right direction before so forgive me if you are already doing this. When your dog barks treed ,tie him there while you search for the squirrel. Get him used to waiting for you to say it's time to get another one, not when he decides it's time. I think you will get mixed opinions on how long so you'll have to decide that. My Cur was 12 mos before she treed her first one and is doing pretty good now at 17 mos. When I was struggling with this time thing most people told me wait until she was two before giving up. Good luck, hope you two can make a team.

You're missing some details. He just making some barks and then leaving before you ever have a chance to even get there, or are you asking a little time out of him and then he's leaving?

You know what you ask out of a dog. Cur or hound, they got to show me some stay. I don't mind a young dog leaving some trees if they show me some good ones mixed in, that tells me they got it in them and will do it again. I can work with that and give em some slack before I start demanding a lot more. In the beginning I get there quick as possible.

This pup has a big motor on him and will go 200to 500 yds in a very big hurry, I have noticed that some of the trees that he trees and leaves are dens I think he is just winding them but not enough scent to stay. I tie him at every tree I get to but I think he trees on a lot of trees and tries to get the squirrel to move then when he doesn't see it he takes off . Ive had hounds for 40yrs and I have never ran to a treed pup if I have to me and this breed are going to be short lived.
