Procedural Question
My history with UKC has always been in the hound world so please pardon my ignorance here.
I am well aware of the process for rule changes in the night hunts for hounds. You submit your suggestions to the chartered breed association that you are a member of. They meet and if the rule change is deemed valid, they present it in a meeting with the other breed associations once every two years.....the rule change is then voted on by all of the breed associations, and if approved, the new rule becomes "gospel" after the beginning of the next year.
My question is this...how do squirrel hunt rules get changed? I'm a relative newcomer to squirrel hunts, but I've heard several guys make "suggestions" about how things "should be"...but nobody really knows how to affect a change for the positive.
Anybody know?

Hey Joe,
Since we do not have organized breed associations in the Squirrel Dog program like we do with Coonhounds, the United Kennel Club will inquire of our customers what needs to be changed, and then formulate the suggestions recieved into proposed rule changes, every so often.
A good example of this would be the new rulebook. The rulebook needed some serious overhaul to update lots of policies, procedures, etc. This gave us the ability to poll hunters at the 2015 UKC SQ Dog World Championship and see just exactly what our customers wanted as far as rule changes in 2016, if any.
Lots and lots of opinions were exchanged, but we at the office whittled all the suggested rule changes down to a solid three. Those three were proposed and approved for the new rulebook.
New rulebooks aren't printed on an annual basis, so whenever somebody submits a suggestion or an idea to UKC for consideration, there is no guarantee that it will make it through. We are very open to receiving input from the hunters as to what they would like to see in the programs we offer, so if you do have any suggestions, please send them to cgruver@ukcdogs.com at your earliest convenience. Thank You!
