Has anyone noticed anything different about the redbone breed the past few years?

As many of you know...I got away from dogs and hunting for several years do to work, family and further education. I started back to hunting again in the fall of 2010 and it took me awhile to catch up on the breed and what has been going on since I stepped away.
Anyway, I am just wondering if people think the breed has picked up any steam from a competition perspective over the last few years or is it pretty much about where it always has been?
To me it seems like it is gaining momentum....but I could just feel that way because what I have been doing in my breeding program seems to be headed in the right direction....for now.
What do you who have been closely involved for the past 10,15,20 or more years without being away from the breed feel like?
When I look around...it just seems like we have more redbones making Grand Nite and placing in bigger hunts..especially the money hunts the past few years...but maybe it's just me.
Does anyone else feel like there has been higher than normal momentum building in the redbone breed on the competition side?
Do you see an increase in demand for redbone pups from competition hunters who have always hunted walkers or other breeds but now want to win with a redbone?
How about the overall quality of our competition redbones...is it better now...or about the same as 10 or 20 years ago. I have my own opinions, but would like to get everyone else's and see what the majority think.
Please share your opinions and thoughts...thanks!

There are more good reddogs out there than ever before. We are headed in the right direction. People looking for a different hunting style of hound is making an impact in our breed.

For years all I heard was crap about redbones, I tried to "fit in" and hunted walkers, I gave up and got a redbone and have never seen so many coon with a pup, so yea the redbone world has come a long ways,on top of that the redbone breeders seem to support one another for the betterment of the breed!!! I will never own another walker, I think your answer is "h''l yes

We are definitely headed in the right direction and on the upswing of what I refer to as the Redbone Revolution. We not only have Walker guys wanting to hunt Redbones now, we have some of the bigger names in PKC hunting them now and more that are waiting for a good one. We've had a Redbone on top of the PKC Pro Series two years in a row now and started off with a big bang winning that Grand American Hunt this year. We had a Redbone in the top 2 of the Grand Masters last fall and top 2 of the first Breed Challenge Hunt this year. I think there will be more Redbones winning Big Hunts this year. We have a lot of momentum right now.

different

I think things are different. We have different people winning with different dogs but overall I really don't see all that much change in the dog power. It's been a while ago but I remember when Harry O was the guy to beat and he did his share of winning. Music won AO, Doc won winter Classic and before that Red and Rocky won a bunch. Then there was all the red power in the Purina Race back when it was a real marathon. Kate, Grasshopper,Jackie,Little Red, Quad, if I remember Allen Gingerich even had a dog that was very, very hard to beat at about that same time.
Farther back then that there were some foundation dogs that certainly turned many heads . Dogs like Timber Jack, Ramblin Red Ace, and TimberChopper. These dogs became studs because of how well they competed against all breeds. I have left out many fine hounds. I'm not saying the dogs we have today are not as good, what I'm saying is we have short memories and I would love to be on a cast that had todays top dog hunting against TimberChopper , Yellow River Red, and Kate.
Every Generation has it's dogs I believe the top hounds of yesterday are no better than todays and todays are no better than those top hounds of the past. JMO

I dont know if the dogs have changed (at least not since 2001) I have no knowledge prior to that. I was a Walker guy back then but wasnt colorblind I had two Redbones back then one was a very good dog and I did not know what I had at the time and the other a mediocre female. I think the dog power has been there at least since then I think the breed is gaining more good handlers which is certainly helping this breed pick up steam.

I can't speak for much of the past but I'll say redbones, to me, didn't even exist in the competition sector I ran here locally and even at the bigger hunts I attended. I would draw one maybe 1-2x a year, and neither of those impressed me much. And by number that still hasn't changed in my point of view.

However, those I've watched closely and hunted with since coming to redbones have really impressed me for the most part. I've seen a few I wouldn't have, some I HATED, a couple I'd give a kidney to have, and many just good solid dogs.

In any competition, much like business, slowly and carefully overtime you can improve what you have all the while the competition begins to slip, and that very well could be a good enough reason to win big more often. The odds will always be against redbones in number, so quality has to remain the key component. And by quality I mean accuracy. You get in a hurry wanting a faster dog that makes more trees and you'll be just like the rest, and what fun is that?

So I personally think things are better, it's nice to see some red splashed in more often in those glossy winning photos.

Yeah, what he said.... There may be more people hunting Redbones in comp hunts now, however.

I don't think it's so much the dog power is that much better.Just the red dogs are getting more opportunities than before.More people are putting them in the hunts therefore giving them more opportunities to win.

I still don't see that the competition side of things have changed much since I have been hunting redbones, but I have only been hunting Redbones for about ten years. There are still a bunch of tricolors winning. I do think the redbones seems to have got better as far as competion dogs but so has everything else.

As far as titles or making one Grand night I think that has got easier do to the fact that it seems that entries in local UKC hunts have dropped off considerably. I know at are club we are rated #2 in the state of Indiana as far as total entries received at local UKC events. Are club has even seen a reduction in the last couple of years in the amount of entries received. We used have on average 20 to 40 dogs at any UKC hunt, but we are lucky to draw 15 to 20 on a good night unless it's a breed sectional or RQE. Even are RQE numbers have dropped. We used to see around 60 to 80 dogs but now we are lucky to hit 50. The money hunts have gained entries by leaps and bounds. We hit 20 to 40 dogs on a normal open hunt on the weekend and around 10 to 20 on a week night. I think this has a been growing trend in my area in the Indiana. So I feel the "title" thing has lost a bit of luster in are area. It may not be like this everywhere, but I bet there has been less UKC entries received at local hunts on average throughout the US over the last few years. So if it's easier to title a dog and it takes less hunts to do than people are not going to go to as many hunts.

Good times.

I see the breed doing real good. What I notice most is, there are several branches (lines) of the breed that offer top competition type hounds. It use to be just a couple lines could compete. Now you find several have that bred in them. I won't try and name them all due to fear of leaving some out. The breed could get better and better if the best dogs of each line get crossed to the best of other lines.
Shane, you and your team are doing a fine job of breeding, competing and promoting your line of top competition dogs. All of the breed benefits from this. Thank you.

I think the dogs are about the same are we have maybe a few more top end hounds
Back when I first started in this breed there was just one group that would be pushing a dog or line in the whole breed at the bigger hunts outlaws then a year or so later it was fireball then it was Danny and Harry with the yellow river then it was nighty night gang then the moonlight crew seemed like They took turns or pasted the torch now you got several groups like that not just one witch makes a Us much more competive

I agree with Mark, Kelly, and Richard. The biggest thing I have noticed though is that the red dogs seem to STAY better at the tree than years past. That makes a difference.

Back in the '70s, when I started, I felt that the Red Dogs struck a track and when they finished, they would tree. Now it seems the dogs are more tree minded. I feel now they want to get treed and to do it, they must first find the track. Heck, sometimes mine will beat the coon to the tree. lol

It used to be said that red dogs didnt travel well.
In their back yard they dominated but fell apart when traveling across the country.
You guys would know about that better than me.

Posted by hillbilly56 on 03-29-2016 12:20 AM:

im not hunting now due to my health but have hunted red dogs for 52yrs the only thing i think has changed in the breed is over the yrs is they have way more go to them when cut loose than the old blood and are way more tree minded and you don't have alot of trash problems with most red dogs but ive been wrong before

Posted by Rob Farr on 03-29-2016 12:40 AM:

Back in the late 60's and early 70's when I started the biggest complaint from some hunters was that most redbones did not hunt far enough and fast enough and beings the compitition hunts reward the dogs for being first to strike and tree this didn't suit some hunters. One of the changes I have seen is several lines of redbones today have been bred that has sure cured that. They will go! Some hunters still don't want dogs like this and I understand why they feel this way the older I get. They want dogs that hunt with you and have a good handle on them and there is nothing wrong with that. I still say a close hunting hound that opens when he smells a coon and is a stay put treedog and takes few or no minus points will still win a lot of casts but to win consistantly in major hunts dogs need to get deep and in a hurry. We have that option today thanks to many breeders wanting to prove redbones can compete at every level. As far as treedogs go I have hunted with some tremendous treedogs both past and present. That has always been there in my opinion.

Most wouldn't "travel" out of your light. LOL

I distinctly remember the first few nite hunts I went to with my first Redbone guys in my cast literally asking me if the dog would even go hunting. That had to come from somewhere and was a real, real problem.

Today they get gone pretty well and I really do think the rank and file of Redbones is improved. I think the first reason is that better females than ever are getting bred. People are starting to pay better and better attention to the females. It used to be it was all about the stud, and to a degree it still is but the females have gotten better as a whole. That approach has done a lot in my opinion and leads me to my second reason why the breed has improved...

The pups are easier to start now than they were then. This might hold true for all breeds, but I believe it is true in Redbones. My first red dog didn't tree a coon until he was 10 months old. My latest did it at 6. That keeps people interested and makes more people want redbone pups which then leads to more hunt wins.

Just my .02

Posted by Richard Lambert on 03-30-2016 03:00 PM:

Elvis, you are right and that may be one big difference today. In the past, there were a lot of Redbones that didn't hunt well or get along with strangers. But I think that has been bred out of most of them. When you breed to the dogs that are winning all over the country then it will automatically disappear. In the past most Redbones were just bred to a hound that was close by. In the past most Redbone hunters stayed pretty much close to home. So their hounds were bred and trained to fit their particular hunting terrain. Now a lot of Redbone hunters are beginning to get out and travel around more so they need a more balanced hound that is better suited to hunt in different conditions and terrain.

Posted by Corey Gruver on 03-30-2016 04:31 PM:

To a certain degree, I tend to think that the people behind the dogs are getting better and better too. We have quite a few good quality breeders, owners, trainers and handlers hunting Redbones nowadays, that help improve the breed and bring new people into it and in my opinion I that helps just as much as better genetics, breeding stock, ability, etc.

I would say this is true for everybody but Richard, he's still as mangy as ever

maybe

Not real sure but maybe we as a breed just cull harder . One other note I do believe the fact that true reproducing records are available and "bragging" can either be proven fact or false has brought the better reproducers into the light. These dogs hold the traits we all want and the genetics that have always been there. I still thing a top hound is a top no matter when it was born.

There have only been 4 PKC GOLD CHAMPION redbones ever. Thats 10k plus in winnings....The first was almost 20 years ago...and the last 3 have earned that title in the last 2 years.....so what's changed?
Sometimes people don't see the changes as they are happening....but can only see them years later when reflecting back. Maybe it's just me...but I think the breed is producing better and better competition dogs. Maybe not better on an individual basis...but maybe more of them in higher percentages.

Agree

I have went through several over the years. All to find out they didn't have it to begin with. Or they would run and tree just fine solo. Then add other strange dogs to the hunt and find out that I have a strange dog. Wouldn't hunt. Socially backward. I can say in the past 4 years I have started 3 different young dogs that I had nothing to do with the breeding. Just bought the Pup. All of them ran and treed Coons solo before a year old. I don't live in thick coon country. These were not turn loose coons. Dogs free cast from truck solo. Strike, track and tree. Those who are breeding dogs and mixing up these lines are doing something right. Congrats and Thank you. I also think that it takes the right person owning a dog who has the passion and deep pockets to accomplish some of winning that is being done. Which also deserves a Congrats. I like the change and looking my forward to 2017 with A&W'S Rough Cut Hope. ( Boone X Backwoods Annie ). Good Luck to everybody in 2017.

I now I'm doing a fair amount of winning with the red dogs the past few years and more and more I'm hearing at the end of the cast from guys hunting other breeds exspecially walkers "do u know where I can get a nice bread red pup" an get calls all the time from people looking for red dogs so I would definantly say that the breed is making a impact in the hunts very strongly now verses 18 years ago when I started. use to be I would be the only red dog at a hunt or my dad or uncle. now their is more an more showing up.
