I am gonna pull my hair out !!!
Well guys I have always enjoyed pushing young dogs and watching them progress to a nice hound, but this week I am about to take up golf and I hate golf lol. Here is my problem; The last few nights neither young dog will stay hooked. two nights ago my male got in a good ways run the track good, came on to the tree nice stayed for about 5 min and as I was getting close away he goes and never looked back,he goes on about 500 yds gets struck again same story same ending. He pulled this crap again and then just bogged down on the track and I walked in and caught him. I went down the road and sent him back for one more dump he got struck run in and treed on a den and stayed put. Tonight took the young male and young female both sent the male down one draw and went and sent the female on the other side of the road. The male gets in about 450 gets struck pushes it down the creek, female gets struck at about 350 in the opposite direction, male gets treed at 950 start heading his way and he shuts it down, female gets treed at 975 yds still in the opposite direction blowing it down get within 60 yds and she shuts it down. What the heck is going on ? the male has always been a stay put tree dog not the hardest dog on a tree but a solid tree dog now he isn't stayin hooked for nothing. He has gotten good at running them down and catching them and I'm wondering if this has created a whole new set of problems. The female has had a problem in the earlier stages of being a little gun shy but a hard hard tree dog now you get within range of her and she will shut it down and move on or mill around. She will tree all night until you get within 50 yds of her I know the shooting bothered her so I didn't over do it and took it slow but how do you get them over this both hounds are way to good to give up on so I need some advice before I have to buy golf clubs that I will end up breaking . lol thanks mike

Lol they might not want to be handled. I've seen young dogs that didn't want to be handled do exactly what they are doing. Keep hunting them they are just young and dumb. Takes about 4 good years to make a coondog. You have a long way to go! If they don't have the tools give them lead poisoning but if they do just keep after them lol

This is why lots folks buy finished broke dogs. It takes lots of hunting and patience to polish a young hound. Rome wasn't built overnight and neither are coondogs

ya I have calmed down a little , lol they are both nice young dogs but man have they been testing my sanity lately. The male needs coon shot down to him to reinforce that you tree coons not run them down and catch them all on the ground, and the female needs a little creative work I am gonna start slipping in to her with my light off and I think you hit the nail on the head she doesn't want handled so we will get through it. I guess what frustrated me was they done such a great job both doing there own thing In a place that they had to hunt hard to get after one. and came treed right and then you add in the fact it was straight up straight down and thick crap and you are so jacked up cause they done such a great job and you crawl to em and the first one leaves at that point I got mad so head to the other and then she does it too. talk about a double shot to the ego lol we will work past it just working on the one thing that is the hardest to deal with and the one thing I demand in a hound, cause im to old and fat to get there quick.

A lot of young dogs seem to go through a track phase between 18-24 months where they have gotten better at tracking and that is their favorite thing to do. Most all come out of it.

Ears
Believe it or not, it could be as simple as a mild ear infection. Spring weather if the time for ears problems.
Have a vet SCOPE the ears. It may be the problem but if not, you can rule it out.

It's obviously something about you coming to the tree. It's not anything jumping out of the tree or they would be leaving on a red hot track. It's not their ears or they wouldn't stay until you get within 50 yards. And both dogs act the same way. They are either afraid of the gun, the coon, or you. A dog can be gun shy without showing fear or trembling. He can fight a coon and still not be looking forward to his next encounter. As soon as you figure this out , you can fix it.

my mailbox is cleaned out now, and thank goodness I don't have to take up golf lol. I have went back to training mode instead of just hunting mode and things are starting to shape up again. It wasn't their ears it was what was between them lol ; Jake , I was sure frustrated that night cause abel has been a loner and stay put tree dog since he was a pup just took a few steps back kinda like a teenager, they start out as good little kids, then they hit the teenage years and do all kinds of stupid stuff but like kids if you give them the guidance they need and some correction and let them know what is expected they will usually turn into good adults. I am sure open to any better training ideas though, I learned a valuable lesson that night hunt one or the other not 2 completely independent young dogs in the armpit of the earth. what was I thinking? mike
