Clarification on a question

I have a question on the strike area, please do not blow any of this out of proportion In anyway. I just want clarification for future judging.

In a 4 dog cast dog A strikes roughly 15 yards in front of you, dog B opens up roughly 85-100 yards away with the rabbit, dogs C and D open up and run with dog B. Dog A immediately takes and goes to dogs B,C, and D...

Is dog A minused for leaving his strike area and restruck with the other dogs?

Is it left as is move on?

What do you feel is a comfortable strike area ?

Just asking because I have saw it scored both ways, and would like to know the correct way to score.

My question added

Is there something in the rule book that says "Strike Area" plus if a hound opens 3 times you have to strike it, so if it opens 15 yards in front of you then again 80 yards two more times you have to declare it struck. So I guess it wouldn't matter where it was at the first bark.

Good question, I to have seen it done multiple ways.
A - I've seen judges say "no strike area in rule book" and move on with strikes recorded as called.
B - I've seen judges call "split track" and minus Dog A for leaving and made them restrike back in.
I really think this is a grey area and when Allen says it is important in the selection of judges this is what he means. Competent judges should not only know but enforce the rules not in how they effect their hounds but to credit the work of hounds properly. There is a difference. When you get a judge to judge unbias casts are very enjoyable.
Sorry to ramble but I do think it is a judgement call and one that you would really have to be there to see.

I have saw it done both ways as well dave, and I understand it is a grey area and you have use good judgement when you are out there. Just trying to get a feel for what is right area, distance... Etc

Hi Doug.

Heres how I try to do it. If its visually evident a dog quits a track and a rabbit is produced I minus his position. If a dog just picks head up and (leaves) pulls to lead dog I dont minus him unless its a declared split track. I dont think there is a distance for holding strike just like no distance for a check area.

This is an excellent question, one that is seen all to often. I try to think of trialing as an approximation to hunting. It was a lack of this concept that created the Walky-Talkies of the 50s in the AKC. Strict adherence to rules without any relationship to hunting thus creating hobby hounds.


Now to the question, I assume that it is your impression that dog A strike and dog B jump were not the same rabbit. I guess Harry is right as written, but if Dog A has left the area and is 75 yards away with the other 3 hounds 3 minutes later, and Dog B jumps a rabbit from a brush then on opening day I want to have dog B in my box. If this is a grey area, if the rules as written are not clear, then maybe they need to be changed.

it is just bad luck for dog B that dog A got the strike on him. I like them to be alittle closer to the rabbit before they open, but dog B gets 2nd strike none the less. JMO
