Dog food

I know this topic is beat to death on here. But I'm looking for some opinions on feed. I'm feeding sportmix 24/20 and have been for a while now. These last few days the dogs have quit eating it. I'm feeding 5 dogs, what are you guys feeding that is working well? I'm not going to feed diamond ever again so that is really the only thing I'm against. Just looking for a good feed at a reasonable price.

i fed sportmix for a few years then dogs got to dropping weight and i switched to showtime and it got hard to find and they jacked up the price and now i am feeding sexton brothers i am not sure how i like it yet all though its cheaper than the other 2 ..

I changed from sportsmix to southern states complete 24/20. Dogs seem to like it better and do real well on it. I had the same problem with sportsmix. Dogs would just not eat it at times then they wouldn't. Not sure why but it gets frustrating.

All 5 dogs wouldn't have all of a sudden decided they didn't like their feed, something else is going on.

As for a good dog food, Taste of the wild is what I feed the dog I hunt. The problem is it to pricey to feed several. You would not be disappointed in Victor.

x2
I have been feeding Victor 24/20 for 4 years.NO problem ever.
Feed less,get more.Less stool,easy clean up.

A friend bought a 1 ton pallet of Sportmix to try,and others to buy/try if interested.
It was good for cpl. weeks. Then dogs stopped eating it,the ones that did threw it up.
Opened a few other bags.Smelt sour 'fresh' in bag.Almost like moisture was too high and it fermented/rotted in bag.
He called the Company told them the problem .They wanted a sample and sent a UPS call tag.He sent them a 1 pound sample.
Same guy that delivered it picked the rest up.
Never heard back from anyone.

ive tried to switch to something cheaper several times.

I always end up going back to Pro Plan. 30/20 in the winter, 26/16 in the summer

Purena

Purina Green Bag hard to beat for the money

Find the dog food wholesaler/supplier then you can buy taste of the wild for example for 10$ a 30lb bag. I think its got a 6 month expiry date on it so lots of stores won't except it if its close to expiry or the y think it will expire on there shelves. Or ripped/rubbed bags

I've fed black gold in black bag for several years now and never had any problems and my dogs love it. I have one dog 9 years old and that's all he has ever ate

This is a tough subject to ever figure out completely. Bottom line is if 5 dogs quit eating their food, somethings wrong obviously.

I had a beagle that was supposed to be 10 mo's old when I got him in 1987. That dog died March of 2006. Grade dog without papers so I don't know exactly when he was born, but at those numbers he was at least 19.

He spent the vast majority of his life living on table scraps of every sort and filled in with cheap dog food. According to peta lovers I was a horrible human being, daily poisoning and killing a dog that lived to be 19 yrs of age, and was still a good gun dog albeit shorter hunts, well into his teens.

how does a person go about finding the wholesaler / supplier to get taste of the wild for $10 a sack ?
i was at tsc the other day looking at feed and some of the bags looked like they used a roll of duct tape on them patching holes and rips in the bags and i seen some bags that just had a couple weeks left on the expire date and all these were on the shelf ..

The bags at tsc with tape on them you can usually get at least 10% off if you ask the manger . I've gotten up to 30% off on some.

Posted by firebird on 02-04-2016 11:27 PM:

Go to a smaller pet food store and ask the manager who supplies their food. Of the guys decent he will tell you or maybe you can work a deal with the store manager on his bags. Anyways if you get the distributor talk to one of the sales reps and tell him your situation. They'd rather sell the food out the back door than toss it in the dumpster. Some places take all the ripped expired dog and cat food and mix it and re bag it as their own brand, feed stores do that lots. Now I'm North of the border but I'd imagine it works the same way down there.

thanks , firebird and micooner , i will check into it and see if they will cut me a deal on some feed ..

The only problem I had with sports mix was way too much waste... back to Purina one ..

I stopped by the mill this afternoon. They do carry victor but I didn't see a 24/20? I did see a 30/20 and a couple varieties of 24/12. I just about have my mind made up that is what I am going to be switching too.

Victor

What is the price on Victor dog food,,,, 30/ 20

Posted by Ron Jackson on 02-06-2016 02:31 PM:

Victor 30/20 about $40 for 40 pounds I have tried to find others to equal Victor the closest I have come up with is the new Hi Standard Ultimate for the money but the fat content is only 16%. I have to feed to much of it to get the results of Victor. It runs about $1.00 per pound also.

I wouldn't say this if I hadn't seen it happen but switch to a grain free dog food.
