Almost had a dead hound last night

Late this summer I almost lost Duds to a coon that absolutely would not leave a large pond, and last night my young Trader female as well. The coon last night absolutely would not leave a pond, until she finally caught him on an edge right in front of me. She's a big gritty female that has no trouble with a coon, but in about a 3 second span she went from dry ground to under water. By the time I got to her she was floating. I assumed she was a goner, but after I got her to the bank she came around very slowly. If it had not been for the birdseye on my alpha I would have assumed she was just a young dog struggling with a track and would not have even went to her. Duds I went to after I seen him in the middle of the pond with the Birdseye. So moral of the story is if you see your dog around deep water get in and get them caught. Both mine are okay, but it could have went the other way pretty easy. Another reason garmins are a tool to be used

it sounds as you are having bad luck with the ponds , i hate to hear that about your dog and another close call and you are right a garmin with birds eye will give you a heads up on where your dog is at and if they could be in trouble , some friends of mine was hunting at a lake a few years ago and a big coon took all three dogs to the water and drowned them , i seen one head climbing one of my dogs once in a river and i am just glad the water was not real deep where it happened at ..

Question

I just got home and the same thing just happen to my male dog .He was barking funny after a long race then i heard him fighting a coon and i remembered that there was a pond in afield were he was at .When i got there he was swimming after the coon they hook up and both went under and then come back up . the coon got on his head and put him under again .I run out in the pond up to my waist and starting yelling at the coon and it jump off and my dog come back to the top and was just barely able to swim to me and i help him to the bank .He stood there shaking for a few minutes and then he finally come back to life. My question for any body that nows is what antibiotic do i need to give him tomorrow.

same coon same pond?

Glad both turned out all right . Just about everyone has had to save one sometime . Josh if that was same pond I'd kill that coon and doze that pond in .
Mr. Taylor baytril would be a good choice but watch for fungal infections in the lungs that can also cause pneumonia . If a cough develops get to vet for culture .

That what i thought would happen .I will just call the Vet tomorrow and get him to give me some antibiotic for him .This is only the second time in my 40 years of hunting that this has happen .The other time i had to knock that coon off my dog with my gun that was a long time go when i was 14 years old .

Different coon, different pond. Neither coon that did it lived to do it again

I had to shoot a coon off my Bawlie dogs head one nite after he put my dog under water for the 4th time. Worst part was I was packing a pistol. The dog came back up and seen the coon doing the crappie flop in the water and brought him over to my side of the river. Could of been a bad deal. But it was a do or die situation.

You wouldn't happen to know which antibiotic they normally prescribe?

I'm not 100% sure because it happened almost 2 yrs ago. But when my little house dog almost drowned, I think they gave me Cephalexin for her. I know that's what they gave us for a dog with a UTI.

IF A DOG AND A COON ARE IN A POND OR DEEP WATER ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT THE SPOT LIGHT RIGHT IN THE COONS EYES AND HE WILL SWIM RIGHT TO YOU AS LONG AS THE DOG LEAVES HIM ALONE

Josh i pick up some amoxicilliin from my feed store . I talk to my Vet he said to give him 500 mg twice a day and if he starting acting sick bring him to the clinic . I read to day that the first three days are very likely the days that he will get sick in.My dog was still doing good when i got home from work so we will see how it goes the next few days .

I put her on some Amoxicilin last night. Figured I would give it to her for a few days just in case. Thanks for the tip

Amoxicillin for preventative won't hurt . If either develops a cough get to the vet . The baytril I recommended passes through lung tissue better to fight pneumonia if it's bacterial , pneumonia caused by a fungal infection they will probably give you intraconazole along with it . Just keep a close eye in them for any difficulty breathing , a cough or any else unusual , all should be good but just case .
