Who has an opinion? On slick tree.....

So this is how my first drop played out: dropped dog he went in the timber struck a track about 150 yards in sounded like it was the start to a cold track at that, and then zipped his lips, (mind you this dog is a open mouthed track dog) intill about 15 minutes later he fell treed and he was nails in the wood treeing hard. After lighting up the tree it was obviously empty but just as I rounded the tree I tripped over a dead coon about 15 feet from the base of the tree!! After checkin out the coon, I'm certain that it wasn't shot earlier that night. So I have about 3 different opinions of my own of what happened but what and how it really played out I will never know for sure...
Feel free to let me know what your thoughts are!!

If you are in Michigan or close you may have treed what ever killed the coon, i no nothing about them but from what i hear a Martin will kill a coon and if a dog trees them will timber out, he could have cold trailed the scent then treed on the tree the coon was last in to, i do not think that if he had of killed the coon on the ground he would of treed afterwards.

i have heard the same thing , i have been told by coon hunters and deer hunters both about dead coons laying in the woods where people was shooting them out and leaving them laying , i guess hunters are getting to lazy to carry them out and take them on the barn anymore ..

All that could be solved by determining if it was shot or tore up by another animal

Curious as to your theory about the coon on the ground 15' away and the dog barking on the tree and not chewing on the coon. That tells me he probably did not even smell the coon on the ground and if thats the case it didn't have anything to do with him treeing right or wrong.

This is interesting and there is no right or wrong and probably no rhythm or reason.

Simple answer without the coon on the ground is the dog ran a track it couldn't handle then grabbed a tree. Then that would not be a fair evaluation of the dog form one post on a message board because the dog has maybe never ran a track before it couldn't handle and it doesn't just grab trees. Only knowing the answers to that will get you the correct answer.

Love to hear your opinions.

Distemper

Possibly could have died from distemper, I have personally seen a few coon lately on final stages of distemper, mostly in daytime. On another note that must be one cold nosed dog to track a coon that has possibly been dead for a couple of days

Moonshine Man I loose myself about once an hour. lol

The first thing I would try and determine is if the dead coon on the ground had any influence on the dog.
One of several things happened. The dog did not smell the dead coon and treeing on the tree had nothing to do with the dead coon. It happened to just be there.
If the dog smelled the dead coon why wasn't he chewing on it instead of barking treed?
Now how the dog is trained and its actions towards dead coon could explain some of this.
I would think he did not smell the dead coon.

If he did not smell the dead coon then from what was described the dog did, my conclusion would be.
Started a track it couldn't handle. The dogs history of doing this or not doing this could help determine the answer.
Then the dog just grabbing a tree to bail itself out. Then again the dogs history of doing this or not doing this could help explain a few things.

Weather is fine. After 3 days of being cold in SC it is good to be back in FL.

Strange for sure but I would bet he just happened to tree next to were a dead coon was and you are reading to much into it. The other option is the coon was treed and killed before you got there. I would assume the night before but maybe someone made a drop and was gone before you got there? Or walked in from somewhere else to a dog that was out of pocket?

Either way you are left with a dog that just slick treed, or one that covered a tree that had already been treed. If he could smell the coon from the night before he could smell the dogs and people that were there also.

They are a lot of things that could of happened or took place, like some of the post said they could of been people there a hour or so before and shot the coon out and left or the dog could of smelled some critter that killed it and treed or distemper could of killed the coon but he may of been in that tree and fell out but the dog treed the scent and never saw the coon,it was still a slick tree anyway you look at it but a weird one.

I think the gentleman that posted the original post said he was certain the coon was not shot that night.

cmuxlow you know the dog. What is your take on this.

The coon was used as a drag earlier in the day???

Posted by AppalachianBlue on 12-08-2015 12:59 AM:

Iv heard where coons will tap a tree and jump out over the dogs head and the dog never see it happen. Maybe it did this but was higher up than it could handle and committed suicide

I had a walker several years ago that if a coon went in a hole or he caught on on the ground he would get treed close to where it happened. When the track ended he would get treed. I would say he found a coon and wanted to reward himself because alot if hounds reward thereself by treeing.

Posted by GA DAWG on 12-08-2015 01:49 AM:

He slick treed on a possum setting around close that was about to eat the dead coon.

My take on it....

first a little about the hound. This is his 14 months old freshman year and he has been a complete natural, who I've only hunted alone. He is about 75% accurate right now with 20 trees. Almost all the trees he made were started with a quick strike and a good let you know he's moving it track voice. He has also layed up a couple, which he had the coon on all the layups. Now he has had 8-9 coon shot out to him and once he makes sure they are dead he will go back to treeing!
So I think he struck some cold track and stumbled over the coon and hit the tree where the scent was strongest. The woods I was in gets a lot of coonhunters somebody shot it and left it
