Pup boo hoo

Been hunting this pup about 2x a week since august He will run and tree a drag. Turned a caged coon loose, he couldn't run it.
Have gotten him on numerous tracks since, he will boo hoo around tapping trees or he will line it out till he Boggs down. (I think he may be back tracking) he has treed maybe one or 2, but a lot of nights end the same with him boo hooing around, I have shot one out to him awhile back so He knows what a coon is. He has a lot of plusses heart,drive,handle good mouth, independent doesn't pay a lot of attention to my female, so when she trees a coon, he usually off tracking elsewhere which is kind of good and bad unfortunately he Just isn't treeing coon, he will get struck, and seems to have a good nose, and He will tree if I bring him into a tree that has a coon and he smells the coon on the tree, just appears to struggle finding the tree on his own. He turns a year this month. Thoughts? I'm really starting to get burnt out on putting more time into him.

What's he out of?

If i look back at what it took me to get the one i have now to where he is at now,i put more time into him in one month then you have 4 months, i know your time is way more limited then mine for running dogs but it sounds like you have to many, I only keep two and have all the time I want to hunt

i would just keep hunting him if he was mine because it sounds as he is doing pretty good for 1 year old and he should start to figure out what he is doing wrong the more you hunt him , you can not rush a pup and have to let them learn as they go and have the patients to watch them go through the good and bad , you don't see to many 1 year olds doing much better than you said yours is doing unless it is one of the freaks of nature pups that you don't see that many of ..

When hes trying to run a track does he keep going back and try to re run or does he push it till it blows up then leaves it all together?

From your post it sounds as if this pup has had between 30 and 40 trips to the woods, which means he has surely crossed some easy tracks that he should have finished with a coon. If he is treeing coon and just cant locate you would have seen some coon sitting up where he stalls.
Its natural to wonder why,whats missing,how can i help him, but the bottom line is it doesnt matter whats missing because its something that you cant change anyway.
If you are waiting for that mythical switch to flip you're in trouble, i have started a bunch of pups through the years and the good ones showed that they had the tools to run a track and get treed after a few nights and improved from there. The ones with a hole will sometimes learn to compensate but that hole will always be there.
You might get some insight by cutting another dog to him when he bogs down to atleast see that hes on a coon and where it went.

How is he on a deer ?
From what you discribe I would be questioning his nose cause it sounds like you have one that can't run a track which is the one thing you can't really put in a dog . Good track dogs can turn it into an art with age and practice . Mediocre ones may get a little better but will never be great at it .

Have you tried when he Boggs down going in there on him with a switch making him leave there ? At just a year old I think your expecting to much to quick ! Being alone doing his own thing just seems like that's his personality take him by himself and give him a coon once in a while by spring you will know more.

Several times my female has treed a coon, and he would go the opposite way working a track, other nights I have seen a coon, and he is tracking away from the coon. The caged coon I released to him, he also appeared to want to run it backwards.

If you have plenty of coon 32 trips out would mean more than if you were in thin coon but thats still not a enough trips out for him to be clicking on track and tree,he is young and goofing around with old and trash tracks and will probably be a slow starter and if he is you will have to put a lot of time to him,they all dont make it and you have to look at that side of it to.

Just a thought and do with it as you like but I have started a few pups that were born loners and they would do all kinds of things until you put them in the woods alone 100% alone and they made it look easy !!! Just maybe he doesn't want tone anywhere around another dog but doesn't know 100% what are where to do it ??? Have you ever carried him at no get alone??? If he has been carried alone already and is doing the same stuff well good luck !!!!

I had a dog that was a lot like your dog .His problem was he was stating old cold tracks. I started hunting him in spots were i would hit more hot tracks such as the woods closer to a cattle feeder that sits out in a field .I also started calling him off the old boo woowho tracks and making him go on and find a new track. If your dog is running the wrong end of the track. He is the only one that can fix that problem .Mine dog done some of that also then one night he turn a track around and went on and treed the coon after that he got a lot better . I would hunt this pup by his self untill he gets a lot better this will help him focus more on the track . He may also be jealous of your old dog so he is starting tracks because she has a track going ,if he is a real independent dog . I think if you hunt him alot by his self until late April you will now if he is going to make it or not . I hope this helps because you have help me with you post serval times . Good Luck

Check and see if he's back tracking. Catch one in a trap. Take it to good open woods let it calm down release it hopefully it will run. Watch which way it goes bring him in below where you cut the coon so he has a chance to go wrong way. If he does correct him send him right way. Few times should help him. But one just rolling a peanut around you got to get in there send him on not seen many get over that it's lack of brains.

Have you been going to the same hunting spots with this pup???? The reason I ask is because raccoon get educated to being run by a dog and when this happens they generally will not make it easy. If so this of course is normal because the average hunter only has so many places to hunt.
The dog is in a critical time in his training when he is learning how to run a track and it sounds like maybe he is trying his best, but it also sounds like the coons know the drill when a dog opens up and they are not making it easy.
I would suggest that before you give up on him you give him a little time off and then take him to a whole different area, maybe even a different state if that's possible. Getting a young dog out of the mountains he's used to and in a tidal marsh or beach that has not been hunted will maybe show you an altogether different dog.
It is something to take a Pennsylvania mountain dog down to Virginia or the Carolina's and put him in a black water cypress swamp....you might be surprised what he does.

He looked better tonight, well he smoked a deer but after that, my female struck and then pulled up short on a tree he ran it on, then they she left and they both pulled up on a tree. He tapped it then moved on. I called him back when I saw she had it, he treed, tied him up and tried to knock it but it was way up high, and after shooting 15 or so rounds I gave up. However it was encouraging to see him run a good track, in the correct direction. Guess I'll have to knock a few out and see if that will tighten him up on tree.

Yeah maybe the whole problem is on the backside if the gun !!!!!!l lmao couldn't help,it buddy !!!!

The first thing I would do to help this pup is, I would learn to shoot a rifle. If you think knocking a coon out will help him, be sure you can knock one out when needed.
