Pup Not barkin

My Little 6 month old bluetick iv had him on a cage coon once but all he'll do is sniff it he won't bark at it at all! How do I get him to bark and get interested? Is this a maturity thing?

Most dogs will,,but some won't bark at a caged coon,,I had a dog,,one of my best I ever had,,that could care less about a caged coon,,tried everything I could think of to get him to bark at it,,to no avail.,,but put him in the woods and it was a different story,,this was many many years ago,,so since then,,I stopped foolin with caged coon and just put them in the woods.
Now I'm not saying to stop with the caged coon,,as many do it,,,it's just that I don't do it,,everyone has their own training program that they prefer.
I like putting a pup in the woods,,and not just acouple times,,then give up,,it takes lots of woods time,,and lots and lots of patience,,a pup can't learn anything sitting in the kennel.

Give him a month or 2. Then if you just have to have him bark at one. Show it one with another dog.

I train the same as Mr Brown, I believe some pups get intimidated seeing caged coon, but the same pup will fill tuff and proud standing over a dead one. Jmo

Iv got a bloodhound in the pen with that won't pay a coon any attention at all this won't affect the pup wil it?

An older dog that barks at the coon can give him more confidence. And he might need to mature a little more.

My buddy messes with all of his young dogs on caged coon. He says that he ties them back a few yards the first few times and let's other dogs get after the coon until the new dog starts showing interest of wanting to get in on the action. Now that is his method but I hardly ever mess with caged coon. I got two male dogs back at around a year old because they wouldn't do anything at all on a caged coon, even with other dogs. Took both of these dogs hunting and they ran and treed with the other dogs on their first turnout. Neither dog cared about the dead coon either when the first handful were shot out to them, they would just go back to treeing with the dead coon on the ground. These two males were out of full brothers and some of their half siblings are the same way and although they get to where they will kill a coon, once the coon is dead they are done with the coon and don't mess with it again once it is dead.

Shoot it, skin it. Play with the hide with the pup, let him chase it etc. Next wet it down make short drags ending in trees. Once he has that down do long drags, once he does that, go back to the caged coon. Be sure to hide the drags in the tree the best you can so the dog is treeing by scent not sight.

i wouldnt show him nothing but the woods and plenty of it.if hes bred to be a coon dog he will go to treeing coons when nature tells him to.in my opinion showing a dog a caged coon aint going to make them a coon dog,if it did coon dogs would be a dime a dozen.lol
