-- seizures? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928435277)
seizures?
my 14 1/2 yr old feist seems to be having seizures. She's has never had them until now, if that is what they are. She stands with her head slightly down and turned to the left. She moves around in a small area as if she can't decide where she wants to be The last 5 minutes or so. No other symtoms. I took her to the vet today. He checked her urine and found her sugar ok and the urine in ok concentration. He also found a little blood, white and red cells. He's treating her for a UT infection first. He gave me some valim and calm her in the evenings and wants to see her again next week. He said it could be dementia.
What are your thoughts.

She is old is the first thing to look at and most Feist will get antsy as they get older and ive seen them do just like you said before they lay down and as soon as they do they may get back up and do it again, most of the dogs that ive seen take seizures will start jerking all over and then go to a shake and some will still stand and some will fall to the ground and do it,keep a eye on her but i think its just old age taking its coarse.

Well she's having seizures pretty often though they aren't serious. She just looks down and walks in circles as if she's making a place to lie down. She's unstable while she's walking and then she get over it. Then she's kinda out of it for a while. I started giving her phenabarbotal last night and again this morning. It's doesn't seem to be helping yet though I'm optimistic it will by tomorrow. I wonder what the vet will say when I tell him I've been giving her phena.?

I took her to the vet today. He did blood tests and x ray of her upper thorax. Everything looked great. He put her on an antinflamatory to see if that would do any good. He said there isn't much more he can do at the local level. I will have to go to a vet hospital. I doubt I'll do that. At her age she doesn't have much time anyway. He did tell me to keep her on the phenobarbital. So I was right to start that when I did.

I have had good luck with phenobarbital- had one on it for 3 years and it almost completely stopped the seizures- But with this dog being 14+ yrs old, who knows what might be causing them...

My feist that is almost 14 does the same thing . She will sit down then hold her head kinda down and 2 the side when she gets up she staggers around in a circle then she will take off walking like all is good . I figured it was just old age Mine can't hear thunder but if she sees anyone get the 22 she still thinks it's time to go out side and tree a squirrel . I have thought mine has possibly had a stoke or mine strokes in the past year . Even old and staggering around you could sic her on a grizzly bear and she wouldn't back down , she may fall down trying to get at him lol . This late in her game I have just let her be , she doesn't act like she's in pain and she can live out what's left doing as she pleases which is usually laying around sleeping in the house .

She seems ok this morning. Last night she was ok too. She had a couple of abbreviated spells but otherwise she seems ok. I think the phenabarbotal has built up enough to be therapeutic. At times during the past few days I felt like I was facing my own death sentence. But now we've been given a reprieve. I am so relieved. Praise God for such wonderful drugs and countless other blessings. This world, cursed as it is, would be like hell w/o them.

this 14 1/2 yr old dog is now back to her usual self. The phenabarbotal seems to be working on her. She hasn't had a seizure that I know of for a few days. Oh what a relief.

I must be missing something here...what you are describing is not sounding like the "seizures" that I have seen both people and dogs have. What I call or know of as a seizure is when the dog locks up, drops in its tracks, falls to the ground like it was shot with a rifle and gets stiff legged, violently shakes all over, sometimes looks like it is running in place, eyes roll over white and tongue hangs out...sometimes whining and howling. Depending on how bad it is, this usually goes on for a minute or so and then the dog appears to pass out then slowly recovers.
Sitting with head down staring to the left and acting like it don't know which way to go may be a seizure of some kind, but it's not the seizure I am familiar with. I got a wife and two kids that have those seizures all the time!!!! Especially when I ask them to do something.
All that said, at 14 1/2....it's something that the little dog is still around. Feists typically don't live that long.
msinc, your right, they are not grand mall seizures. these seizures are minor but can lead to more serious seizures and every seizure a dog has, the more brain damage is done and the seizures get worse and worse. That is why it is so important to treat them as soon as possible to stop the progression.

My dog has a seizure every 2 or 3 months. My chocolate lab. He does the whole lock up thing and all. But he doesn't pass out. Or his eyes rolled back. Just blank stare wit eyes all bugged out. Sucks.

I thought I would update everyone on the condition of my 14 1/2 yr old dog. She is now stable, she isn't having any seizuers at all. I give her phenabarbotal twice a day and she's back to her old self. The good news it that instead of a brain tumor, she probably has a lesion. This means that she is likely to live longer. With a tumor they go fast. This cursed world is a little easier to live in with the blessing of medicines. Praise GOD!
