Purina Race

When are we going to see the "New Format" that I have been hearing about? Will the Purina Race return to the glory and prestige that is used to hold back in it's glory days before y'all decided to "improve" it? Can you give us some hints? Do I need to start making plans to go to the Grand American this year? What about Southern Redbone Days and SETWA Days?

I remember when we lined up just to guide a Purina cast at the Breed Day events that showed up at LaGrange every year. I hauled Marv Schmucker and Rocky2 all over the Midwest following the Purina Series and it was a blast. Really great hunts. Now it's a totally nothing race.

Thanks and you are right they are the same as last year. Maybe there aren't going to be any changes. I guess that either they were just "talking" about making some changes or I just misunderstood. It wouldn't be the first time.

The old days of Breed Hunts and Big State Hunts where the best. The big named dogs showed up,the dogs leading or close to the top had all the GrNt blockers with them or they would call and say they were on the way and could you be at such and such. Lot of fun back then. Everyone that ran the race jabbed fun at each other, then plotted against them out at the trucks. It was like an episode of Survivor. We may never see those days again.

The one purina cast that stands out in my mind the most that can be openly talked about was at the Ky Houndsmen Benefit in Stanford,KY. A side note is that this very good hunt has DIED since it was taken off the schedule.

I drew out that night with 2 very nice big time winning Walker dogs,I was hunting a very nice GrNt Gold Ch dog as well. Then there was Russell Gray and a little redbone gyp. GrNt Big G Farms Pepper.

We turn loose. All walkers shoot to opposite areas and get treed. Ol Red just boo hooing around. We go score dogs. To best of my knowledge we didn't have anything in our dogs tree. Ol Red had come treed while this was going on. We go score her she has it. Turn her loose and she trees 3 single kittens in a 100 yard radius of the first coon. Then dropped through there and had another. She scored 5 single coons all on her lonesome in some very rugged country. That was the worst I was ever beat. SHE WAS A NICE OUTFIT.

crooks

The year I guided and judged the casts they had it all set up who was gonna win the little female dominated the cast and the male dog won.we tried it again the next year and it was just as bad.so until they change the rules so they draw out like everyone there won't be a purina hunt at the iowa state hunt again.

I agree with you. The houndsman hunt is a fun hunt to attend however, ever since it was taken off the purina schedule, the attendance has dropped tremendously and in my opinion, it falls off a little every year.

Richard, I would bet a coke you knew there was no change in the format before you posted.

You would have lost. There is a "Big Change" in the format and it is going to be "Very Exciting". Allen Gingerich said so a couple of months ago. He said that there would be an article in the December Bloodlines. I can't wait to see it.

unfortunately the purina committee voted for no changes to the upcoming 2016 season. 2017 is under consideration, but there will be no changes in the format for 2016. Its all status quo. Anyone care to BET?

Well darn! Do you know what the proposed changes were and why they did not approve them? Does anyone know someone who is a member of the Purina Committee? How do you get to be a member of the "Committee". Are they elected or appointed? Do they change or once you get on it are you a member for life? How much are they paid? Is there a list of the "qualifications" and makeup of the Purina Board printed/posted anywhere?

Posted by Richard Lambert on 11-22-2015 03:38 PM:

I just looked it up in the UKC Rulebook. It says that there is one member that represents each breed. It also says that they are "prominent and experienced individuals". But that is all that there is in the rulebook.

It also says that each event is selected for it's "prestige and organization". I wonder if the committee really thinks that the current hunts are the "most prestigous" ones that are held.

The rulebook doesn't say whether Purina or UKC has any authority or "oversees" the board or if they are completely autonomous?

It was my understanding that when they went to the present State Hunt Format, it was to increase attendance and encourage participation in the State Associations and really had nothing to do with the "prestige" of the Purina Race. They just tried to "use" The Purina Race to prop up another program. Isn't that what politicians do all of the time? They add unpopular amendments to a popular bill to get them passed.

I am not in favor of completerly changing the Purina Race but I think that a few improvements could be made. I also think that The National Purina Championship and the State Hunt Format to determine entrants is a good thing. But couldn't this be something separate from "The Purina Race" now?

There will be no changes!
they were going to change the format and it was going to be a good change to where a person could run it and not go all over the world and pretty much took the big money thing out of it. but there were big changes in upper management in purina and so they did not want to change the format at the moment. so again unfortunately if big money jumps in then they win. and by the way they were not changing the hunts to include breed days but just state hunts and select big events....world, autumn oaks, and winter classic.
the printing in the Nov issue had already went to press before UKCF had realized this themselves about upper management change.

"Upper Management", I just love that term. Where would we be without "Upper Management"? Aren't they the guys that have never participated in what they are trying to manage?
