Thermal vision

Have any of y'all ever tried thermal vision to find coons in the trees you treed on? Just wondering how well it works or don't work.Thanks in advance.

I've never used one,but I've seen on here where a few fellas have,,I would think those would be the best thing a person could use,,it's gotta let you know if the meat is there,,or not,,whether the leafs are on or off,,wish I could afford one,,cause I wouldn't go to the woods without it,,jmo

A couple weeks ago, my brother in law went along with me on a hunt. He brought along his thermal scope that he uses to shoot hogs out of his pecan orchard. Trees were heavy with leaves but 3 out of 4 trees we were able to find coons that we had pretty much given up on with headlights. 4th tree was easily found with our headlights. As a bonus, I was able to watch my 2 dogs and how they reacted to a doe and fawn that were bedded as we hunted towards them. These deer never really paid much atttention to dogs untill they got within 30-40yds and then only stood and trotted 70yds and rebedded. Pretty neat to watch without the aid of a light. The only downfall of infrared ,besides the price, is that leaves give a white signature also, making it not always easy to find the coon.

When the leaves are on is when you really need it, but it's hot weather also and the trees hold alot of heat through the night making it difficult to find the coon...

I have been using one for probably 10 years. You will know what your hound is doing pretty quick. Great tool for training and knowing where your hound is slicking or not.

I have a FLIR thermal weapon sight. I have taken it coon hunting several times and if he's there it will find him. Thermal devices see "differences" in heat. The hottest in temperature object will show up as either white or black, depending on how you have the scope set. It doesn't take a lot of temperature difference to contrast. It will not look as good or be as easy in the dead middle of the hot summer down south. It would probably work as good year around in cooler locations up north.
What it wont do is look thru a hollow tree. One other problem is that when it is cold out you will see a big white blob of heat. You will know something alive is there, but with the thermal device alone you wont be able to tell a coon from a cat or possum. The biggest thing about it is that you will know where to look with a regular light.
Today I got to see/use one of those little $300.00 add ons for a smart phone...I would have to say that you are not going to find too many coons with it or maybe a better way of saying it is you will not be very decisive with it. Bottom line, the big ones that work, work great and cost great too...the little $200-300 smart phone add-ons wont do for what we are trying to accomplish.
The one I have has a memory and will do snapshots...I will take it along next time and get some photos to post with the thermal and looking at the coon with a regular light so everyone can see.

Thanks for all the input. I was thinking about getting one and trying it. My eyes aren't what they used to be even with these new LED lights.

Could it be used in a nite hunt... or would that give you an unfair advantage?

A guy on cast at Labor Day Classic had one. Cost $1800. It would def find coons then we used our lights to verify. He said in summer it great but in winter trees held heat and had you looking at blank spots. Also he said if look up in den it always showed heat. It was a very neat tool. I can see where it would pay off.

I don't know about the rest of the kennel clubs, but you cannot use them in a UKC nite hunt at all.

I have the newest IOS version of the Flir for iPhone I received 2 weeks ago. I've had it in the woods a few times and it hasn't worked for finding coon in the trees with leaves. I can see the dogs great at the base of the tree but nothing in the trees.

I cant believe nobody didn't jump on here and say, "that's because you are hunting redbones!!!!" Yep, the one I tried this past weekend wouldn't do it either. It was pretty good at following a blood trail of a deer if it didn't have too much of a lead on you.

I thank it would be cool to try it. But I'M afraid I might would want to shot my dogs.LOL As far as every cast having one you could do it like a random drug test that way they will not know who has it until its to late..
