Why shoot?

Last night the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in looked like my kind of night. So me and my two buddy's took my old track man female and his pup. We hunted Killdeer plains (public). We dropped and my dog went out wallowed on bad track till I finally snatched her up went down the road cut again. And she vanished. We drove and drove. And finally we thought we heard her way off. We kept stopping and listening and before you knew it we were out of Killdeer on private. She was way back in a block of woods treed we walked in no light and had one buddy drive to next road. We got to my dog behind a big farm house.(not close mind you the house was a haul in its self). I grabbed the dogs flipped my light on and instantly there was the coon shut it off and began to leave. When the land owner started shooting! I just wonder how little common sense it takes to know a dog treed is not a threat to your lively hood.and no I didn't have the garmin in on her. Lol

Little common sense

Mr Lambert, you would be surprised how many people have not been coon hunting and do not know the difference on a tree bark and hate too inform you, but it probably wasn't the dog he was going to shoot or try to shoot. LOL maybe not so funny, have been shot at before not fun.

I'm a landowner but I don't understand shooting somebody over them walking on my land. They're not hurting anything and they're not bothering me. If I see lights by my barn I'll go out and investigate with my pistol in hand but I don't want to shoot anybody. I know landowners that shoot first and ask questions later.

Been there too. Except we were on the land we were supposed to be on. Neighboring land owner showed up shooting. We called the law and he tried to right US a ticket for trespassing. #1 we were where we're supposed to be, #2 we have a right to retrieve regardless.

my rules too ! I had a guy shoot at me a couple years ago and ill bet when he sees a coon light now he hides in the closet.

I have never understood what a landowner could possibly be thinking about when they start shooting. The Hunter knows where the landowner is shooting from but the landowner doesn't know who the person he is shooting at is. Unless the landowner moves very soon that hunter could come back and return fire at any time.

Shoot???

I'll show you a post that I put on another thread.

"I want to give you an example of an incident that happened a few years back. Some friends of mine were coon hunting when their dogs got on another property. One of the guys knew this fellow that owned the property so they pulled across the road from his house and was going to go get permission to get their dogs. This gentleman came out of the house with a gun and shot into the air. My friend announced who he was the gentleman began yelling at them and telling them he was going to call the game warden and not to retrieve their dogs. My friend never gave him a chance, he went ahead and called the DNR. The DNR told him that they were going to dispatch the State Police because once a firearm is involved it is turned over to them. Long story short, the land owner went to jail and my friends were aloud to retrieve their hounds. Needless to say, the landowner was knocking on my friends door the next day begging him not to press charges, which he didn't, lesson learned! This is the way the law states it in WV, I'm sure each state differs."

Read your local laws you may be able to do the same thing about this problem.

I quit counting on how many times I have been shot at years ago. I had one buddy who was shot at with a semiauto shooting trace rounds.

I have found out over the years two biggest factors have been when the land owner can not shut up their own dog or alcohol.

Best thing to do when shots are fired is to call the law. It's against the law to shoot unless you are in danger.

It pays to have friends sometimes, I had a AR pointed at me 2 years ago, by the time it was over the land owner asking for forgiveness and the deputy was begging me to admit that he did point it at me, but I didn't, figured I had some blame, the guy did lose his gun for while anyway

LOL! No, I don't hunt with Matt. This actually did happen in Daybrook though. The fellow didn't fire at them just discharged a firearm and that's all it took.

Posted by Chris Snyder on 10-31-2015 01:20 PM:

Got shot at the other night

While on ground I have permission on...

A first time for me. I immediately returned fire and started walking home. I went up to his house the next day to speak with him and introduce myself so he could at least see who he is shooting at.

I also wanted to remind him that if I would have had my kids with me hunting that there would have been an immediate and violent response and he might want to consider that before throwing lead in the future.

Truck was there but nobody would come to the door. That conversation is not over yet.
