Hooper Ridge TRADITION

My buddy sent this video to me last night of his new pup out of Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Hang'em High Holly and Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Rockets Top Gun.

The video is not of real good quality but you can get the gist of what is going on.

This little rascal started life off on the hard side of things. It was almost dead on two separate occasions when it was less than 3 days old. I started bottle feeding it and then Holly stepped on it's ear and her toenail severed her ear to the point that it dried up and fell off. This little pup is a pure survivor. She is now 3 months and two weeks old as of last night when this video was shot. This was her first trip to the woods and the first tree she was ever taken to. She certainly is not the first pup to ever tree at 3 months of age in the open woods, on her first trip, but it sure is gratifying when you see it happen within a strain that you have hunted since about 1970. Another dog that is in her pedigree comes to mind that treed on her very first trip to the woods was Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Dolly. Dolly was Rockets mother, thus making her Gun's grandmother.

I am so very happy for Mr. Scott Spears and his new puppy. I hope she and you have many, many nights in the woods together. This is not Scott's first Hooper Ridge hound. He also owned Gr.Nt.Ch. Hooper Ridge Renegade Jake. Ole Jake is now dead and gone, and Scott was looking for something of that same bloodline. Congrats Scott, no telling what she will do when she really gets old enough to hunt. But Man am I happy for you. My wife and all my grand daughters told me I should have kept that pup, but I wouldn't listen, LOL.

Sure hope the one I kept starts that easy!!!!

This is my project for this hunting season. This Is Hooper Ridge Big River Thrasher. Thrasher is off Mark Looney's Big River Dan X Thrashers Lockdown Rose. He is really starting to crank and I'm sure looking forward to putting him in the timber by himself when our coon season comes in here in Ohio. Those of you that are already able to harvest, you guys are VERY lucky. Our DNR looks out for mainly deer & turkey hunters and the rest of us are getting pushed under the rug so to speak.

Hooper Ridge Tree Singing Babe

Here is a short video of my Son's hound Hooper Ridge Tree Singing Babe. Babe is a full sister to my new prospect Hooper Ridge Wicked Lizzie. Babe operates a lot like her Mom "Holly" This is his prospect for the coming season. We plan to hut Mother daughter in our clubs pound hunt this Saturday.

Who knows, we may just get lucky!!

She sure has me excited with her natural instincts. Of course we all know how that goes. A pup is just that "A Pup" until they start turning the crank. But this little girl has absolutely loved the scent of a coon since the first time she ever smelled one. I sure can not wait till she grows up enough to start fighting a coon.

Here is Lizzie doing what she loves to do. The fishing pole has a coon tail tied on the end of it so that I could get it higher in the tree. Lizzie has not yet seen a live coon. I think I will wait till she gets a little older before I subject her to the adrenaline of battle. What is so crazy is that Lizzie returned to that tree about 5 days after this recording smelling up and down the tree. But I do now believe she is working from memory and not by scent. Maybe she could only smell the scent lightly but it sure wasn't strong enough for her to start treeing on her own on that 5th day. At any rate I sure wish she was about 3-4 months older than she is. But Oh well, they get old fast enough the way it is, LOL!!

Here is the young gun I been playing with this season. He is catching coons every night in the month of December. Really starting to put the plan into action so to speak.

He is off of Mark Looney's Big River Dan and one of Kenny Thrashers private females (Thrashers Lockdown Rose)

Nice Mouth, BIG locate, good track speed. Hoping he is ready by English Days.

Good looking pup Dave! Aint nothing like the feeling ya get when them young dogs put it all together. Best of luck with him. By the way i talked to Mark Looney a few nights ago and he said he had been burning the woods up. He has one or two young dogs thats got him all fired up. That could mean bad news for whoever he draws at the hunts! Keep pouring it on them pups buddy!

Dave I hope your back is feeling a little better now. Snow on on the ground now and temps predicted to go to Minus 3 degrees tonight. Guess the young dogs will be on the box till El Ninio comes back around. That is of course unless I drop them with Ole Holly Gal.

I never was crazy about dropping a young dog in these conditions until I can trust it more, LOL!!

My ole back is some better and i am out stirring around a little with my feist squirrel dogs but aint getting out at night. Coon hunting hurts it more wearing all the gear plus cant see them holes or things ya hang your feet in now and then as well as i can in the daytime so just waiting awhile for more healing time. I know that minus 3 crap aint for me! Thats when i would be in the house with a movie and popcorn in hand. I have hunted in zero weather and below before but i have outgrown those days i think. You guys up there are just tougher than i am i reckon. With every year that passes i become more of one of those fair weather hunters lol. Hope things continue to go well for you and your hounds.

Glad your feeling a little better and still able to get out and enjoy the squirrel dogs.

As for us being tougher up here, I don't think I can be included in that statement either, LOL. I used to hunt when it got down cold like that, but now that I'm retired it just seems much easier for me to wait till the temps moderate just a bit. You see, I'm getting soft in my old age as well, ha! ha!

Weather warmed up the last couple nights so I was out running that Dan pup, and we were able to get a coon treed on the outside both nights. Think I will rest these old bones tonight and watch the football playoff's.

Dave glad you got to get in a good hunt with Thrasher! It's just freaking COLD right now. Our wind chill was like 10 today and the temp held steady about 18 or so. I packed on a few layers of clothes and took my little feist dogs Pistol and Mattie out for a short 3 hour hunt. I froze my butt off but had fun. These little dogs are pretty tough and managed to tree 10 but had a few timder out to dens but managed to sack 6 of em. Here is a little video of Pistol and Mattie. It aint the same fun as coon hunting but it beats the couch. Keep pouring that hunting on Thrasher!

Were you hunting by yourself?? If so how do you get those squirrels to flip around on your side of the tree so you can shoot them out?? I always had trouble getting them to stay on my side of the tree long enough for me to get a bead on them LOL. Guess I'm just a bit too slow.

Thanks Dave! Im enjoying the little dogs but i wont clutter up your thread with my junk i just wanted to show ya what i had been doing and brag on my little dogs a bit. Lol! I was hunting with a buddy so that made it easier to get the squirrels turned. I have hunted by myself and carry several yards of trot line string with me and tie to a smaller tree then walk to the opposite side. Once there i jerk on the string to shake the tree on opposite side of me and sometimes the ole squirrel will slip around to my side. Old timers way of doing it but it works now and then. The only other way i get em by myself is once i reach the tree if i dont see the squirrel i will say out loud " well i guess im gonna have to put these lying feist up and cut this accurate walker dog loose " and the squirrel will immediately come to my side to see this phenomenon! Lol! Sorry i just saw the opening to throw a dart at the walker boys that might happen across this. I guess ive been cooped up too long! I will start posting some pics and videos from time to time over on the cur and feist section if you wanna check em out and chime in. Enjoy them hounds buddy!

Hi Dave just wanted to say I really enjoy reading bout ur dogs. I bought Huck off mark h. this summer n have been hunting him fairly hard this kill season n he sure is a nice hound. Mark done a nice job with him. He is my style of hound. I was wondering how many were in his litter n how any of them turned out? All in all he is one solid hound that will probably spend the rest of his days here. Keep up the good work.

Hello Lucas, Thanks for jumping on this post and giving me an update on Ole Huck. I'm sure glad you like him. I really liked that pup and probably should have kept him instead of the female I did keep. Ole Huck looks an awful lot like his daddy. There were 6 pups in that litter that lived. My son has a littermate to Huck that is doing an outstanding job. I kept a little blue female that locked just like her mother only smaller in size. I sent her to a guy in Illinois as she was just a bit too tight on the ground for me. One went to Belpre Ohio (really nice) male pup. Guy sold him and I lost track of him. The other two went to a couple of local fellows as well. One turned out really good, the other ended up spending his life on the chain, (what a shame)

I made the cross again this past summer. These pups are now 6 months old and all have been treeing on hang up's since about 3-4 months old. This pup I kept this time has went all the way since 4 months of age. Starting to tree some as you arrive at the tree. Will tree a drag or a hangup in a heartbeat, LOL.

Would love to get to take a hunt with you and Huck sometime. What town do you live near? Would love to see some pick of Ole Huck. Feel free to post some pics on here or send some to my phone. My cell number is 740-504-4897.

Ole Huck

Luke, Here is a picture of Ole Huck at about 7-8 months of age, before I sold him to Mark. If you can, I sure would appreciate you posting a picture of him now if you have one.

I took my 19 month old Thrasher dog and my 6 month old Lizzie female to the woods tonight. Thrasher treed two singles. 1st one was only about 200 yards in, 2nd one was about 525 yards. Lizzie ran on the first track but didn't tree. She never opened on the 2nd track but did start treeing when I was about 125 yards away.

On the way out, Lizzie was working and opening on a track by herself, but I hung on to Thrasher as I was almost back to the road and didn't want to take a trip back into that deep hollow again unless the little pup pulled a real surprise for me, LOL.

Had a blast and only hunted about 2 1/2 hours. Big Old woods that I love to just walk around in. Good Hunting to all!!
