New coon gun?

Looking to buy me a new coon gun.Cant decide what I want.Any ideals?Dont really want to go over $200.

If you could find a Thompson Center Hot Shot you wouldn't be disappointed. But they quit making them so you would have to find a slightly used one, but man are they nice.

Another vote for the 10-22...you might have to find a used one though for $200...I think they are around $260 or so new.

X2 on the Hot Shot ! Short, accurate, lightweight and pretty dependable. I rigged a sling on mine and really dont know it's on my back.

Hot shot is the best I have found if you do a lot of walking and carrying if you have easy hunting and don't have to walk much then 10-22 is a good choice but I do a lot of walking in some rough conditions lot of the time and I would t trade my hotshot for anything and you can also load it with gloves on it will punch holes in holes !!!! Looks just like an encore but a miniature version but on the same template !!

Find a little bolt action that takes a clip, i have a little savage, stainless with a plastic stock that is nice and light.
I never liked a semiautomatic for coon huntin, the coon falls now you have a live round in the chamber to deal with.

Yes sir, that is absolutely an issue, and I have seen several near accidents that really could have went bad. Especially in the excitement of knocking out a coon to a young dog that just did a fantastic job. I have seen enough times when somebody {too many times me!!} looked down the barrel of a loaded, safety off, at battery rifle that it has caused me to maybe reconsider who I hunt with or who carries the gun and does the shooting.
That said, the problem with most bolt 22's is that if the bolt comes open and the trigger gets hit by a limb while slogging thru the woods, you get to the tree and go to knock out a coon and have no bolt in the gun!!! That has also happened to me more than once. This is really easy to do with a bolt gun that has to be manually cocked because you don't have striker spring tension to help keep the bolt closed.

Ruger

X3 on the Ruger 10-22!!

I bought one 2 weeks ago and put a cheap 4X scope on it. Seems to shoot nice at paper. Can't wait to see how it performs in the timber! Hitting the bulls-eye at 20-30 yards is a little different than a coon swinging on a limb 50-100 feet in the air.

Coon gun

I have a savage rascal with a wood stock and love it very accurate and very light. You can pick up a new one for $200

Used .22s for sale around here are rare.Im fine buying new but want something that will stand up to the abuse of coonhunting and not malfunction. Thanks for the input guys.

coon gun...

Personal favorite is an Anschutz Woodchucker, am a gun dealer and have a lot of .22s, always liked bolt actions the best, have semi-autos, pumps, levers, single shots, matter of preference, if handgun use SW 35 J frame, the Ruger Charger might also be a good choice, but have not shot one yet, shoot very coon these days anyway....

Matt
I bought a savage bolt-action with clip and synthetic stock,
it's not as short as some of the other that people are talking about on here, but it's not nearly as loud as them short guns that are easy to pack and I can shoot it more accurately,
stop by check it out.
or I can sell you a like new rossi single shot 22/410 combo.
easy to pack you can rabbit hunt in the day coon hunt at night. .

Win 67 is a good 1 , I like my old rem 514 a good as any I have had. but my eyes are getting old so I went with the savage and put a scope on it.
Matt I got it at 68 bait and tackle. I will stop and price 1 if you like. It was dead on out of the box
think bass pro or walmart had 1 on sale all most like it, just didn't have the accy-trigger.

I have a Winchester 67.Shot a lot of coons out with it but it ant drilled for a scope. When these coons climb up these tall oaks it's tuff to knock them out with open sites.Id like to get it drilled and tapped someday.

X4 10-22 Ruger

Posted by Gary Roberson on 10-20-2015 07:11 PM:

10/22 is not bad but I am a real fan of the Ruger American Rifle in .22 or .22 Mag. I have a Trijicon RMR sight mounted on my .22 Mag and love it for coons or bobcats. If I would not catch too much heat, I would use on lions as well.
Adios,
Gary

I wouldn't carry a rifle coon hunting if you paid me. I carry a pistol, with the the cheap laser sights you can put on the now you don't have to be able to shoot a pistol and they carry SO MUCH easier.
