Which stud or bloodline ?

Which stud is throwing or a certain bloodline that has these traits?
1.) Excellent layup ability
2.) A lot of drive (deep hunting type)
3.) Ability to work some of the roughest of tracks
4.) old houndy look ( big head , long ears, and big loud mouths)

Thanks for any replies in advance.

You have just described the perfect dog.

Let's look at two of the things on your list..excellent layup ability and extreme rough tracking ability.

In my limited experience, it has been exceedingly rare to find both of those extreme ability factors in the same dog.

Dogs that are real layup artists usually prefer that over grinding out bad tracks.

And likewise, dogs that really excel at handling bad tracks generally are more track oriented and don't go to the woods checking trees.

There are dogs that can do both, but I don't think I have ever hunted with a dog that truly excelled at both.

And another thing...none of the dogs I have hunted with that are truly layup specialists have been super deep, hard hunters with incredible drive. More like smart, busy hunters that check a lot of trees and don't blow through the country.

A lot of dogs that people think are hunting deep and treeing layups are just tight mouthed suckers ambushing pop up coons.

The Crockett dog is for sure a good hound for you to look at. He is a coon dog without question and is throwing big, houndy pups.

Breed a good female to him and you may get what you want.

GRCH GRNTCH Uchtmans Foggy Mtn Blaze

Dual Grand Uchtmans Foggy Mtn Blaze, I've got a pup out of him. He's a blue dog that'll keep up with any walker, but 10 times more accurate. Has been hard going from the time I started him. Super loud, and can work a cold track, will take time but he always has the coon at the end. And mine is just one of many out of Blaze, he is throwing some dandy pups. Shannon Senter owns him, check it out

Hey Kyle

It's very rare to get the best of both worlds, last dog I saw could do that and Lonnie will agree was a black and tan named Midnight, Todd Wix Hammer dog was like that and he to was a black dog. I have not seen it in the blue dogs, not saying they don't exist just hard to get both rolled up in one. Good luck and keep breeding coon dog to coon dog it's the best you can do and see what comes out of them. I always liked what Brummy has thrown, or Spring Creek Hooch. They are sure some good ones out there, I agree 100 % with Mr. Carroll.

Cant say much bout the looks but in the coon dog department my opinion Piazon would be at the top of the list I got a bitch 16 month old out of him that is the best young dog I've seen in 40 years of hunting

Posted by msinc on 11-08-2015 01:43 PM:

Another vote for Piazon....I am liking mine, not just loud...he is very loud:

Another stud you might want to consider would be Ramblin Blue Junior, he's in Virginia. He's a pretty big dog that throws hard tree dogs with good noses and loud dogs with big long ears. I have a real nice female out of him. Joe Vogatsky is a great guy to deal with.

Mr Carroll what do you think about Grace now that you have hunted with her? She hasn't been hunted in a year either. She is now 3 and has been layed up. She posses these traits and if you hunt with her enough you will see them. She is the only one out of that cross that didn't get the powerful mouth though. She got her mother's mouth for sure but you can still hear her just fine and especially since she will usually be all alone deep with the meat lol

All bloodlines have good and bad in them; there is no perfect line of hounds! As far as what stud is throwing all you have listed, who knows. All studs can throw good and bad litters, but the thing to remember is the female is 50% of making that litter. So a lot of what comes out of a litter will not only be from the stud, but the female also. I would suggest you pick 3 or 4 stud hounds that you think might cross well with your female and make a trip to go hunt with them and see what traits they have to offer. But instead of looking for the things you listed, you may want to consider looking for the traits your female is lacking. If you want to better your hounds then I would say start by looking in your own backyard for what is lacking and try to better them areas first. This is just my opinion of course.

My mountain Music Blue "Cache" is a direct grandson of Smokey River Blue Dia. Jim and Is out of Dual Grand Ch Meadowoods Blue Penny.

He has it all. He is throwing a lot of Penny in his pups He is just two years old and has over a hundred pups. They re book to breed back. A lot of naturals awesome drive. Bear and cat dogs out of him , Ken Hitchcock has Willie, Mr Jones has a good one in W.Va.

My abbey pups are Very Very nice!

Posted by coonbone on 11-12-2015 03:47 PM:

Cabins, what do you feel like Diamond Jim was most dominate at putting into his pups? Like mouth, nose, speed, treeing, tracking, looks, hyper, calm
,and desire?
I always heard putting track speed into his pups was his forte.

Posted by cabins on 11-12-2015 04:45 PM:

Yes I do. This line came from partially from Eddie Ross of mountain Music blue Fame. I bought pups off of Jim back in the 70.s and the track speed along with drive is exceptional.

I ran 3 one yr old pups out of Cache and abbey last night w abbey . Those four hounds an drive cold tracks fast , you could cover all four w a dime. Sound all alike each one trying to beat the other.

Matt turner has bred a touch of big game in this line and that took the trash out of them. This line is accurate!!

I feel fortunate to benefit from so many houndsmen before me.

Eddie Ross was a friend of my papa Levi's. he talks about him and their hunts down in Louisiana every time we visit.

I like the gyp I have out of Blue x Abbey! she acts really good and has a good mouth.
