Blood in semen???

I have an 11 yr old hound that I recently had collected and AI into a female. The vet and I both noticed an obvious amount of blood in the semen. I understand that it fights against the semen, but curious if anyone else has experienced this with their hound, and if it resulted in a successful breeding. We looked at a small sample of this semen before inseminating the female and it still had overall good mobility, just not large volume.

On a side note, I had the dog collected less than a year ago with 90+ % mobility and quality semen just lower volume.

It is quite common in senior dogs. He could have an enlarged prostate or could have just burst blood vessels from collection. I like to collect directly into extender if I have a dog that has a bloody collection.

Yes, everything I have read has linked it directly to prostate most likely. I read an academic article that said a bloody sample was not usually effective in fertility if frozen, but if collected and immediately AI into a female, then it had a good chance of fertilizing eggs.

The first occasion I had him collected about a year ago, I actually had it frozen. There was no traces of blood in the sample, so I know that semen will be fine, but in your professional opinion, do you think my above scenario will be fertile?

Thanks

It honestly depends on what the motility and morphology was. If everything else was good than, yes, you should be successful. Also if you timed her properly will also and always play a factor.

Thank you. I think we are good on the mobility and such, and we got the time right as well in my opinion. We AI her twice, I believe on the 10th and 13th days
