Should a person use automatic dog feeders?

Just wondering what peoples opinions were on automatic feeders. I just built my new kennel and install theses feeders. It definitely makes it earlier, say like when I work late or something. I've noticed that my dogs might be getting a little over weight. I usually hunt between 2 and 3 nights a week and Im not sure if thats enough to keep some of the weight off. So let me know how some of yall other hunter use these feeder and if I should keep using them.
Thanks for any advice.

I had a dog that would eat all the food in the feeder every time, so I just fed him his daily ration and didn't have to worry about it getting wet or anything. I have a female that might take her 2 days to eat a scoop. So I fill hers up and she stays thin. Just depends on dogs

If they are on a self feeder, it is always possible they ate just prior to taking them hunting. I have always heard that hunting one with a full stomach could lead to a twisted gut. I play it safe and just feed mine when I get in from hunting.

An automatic timer feeder would be best, one that keeps air out of the main container to protect the fats from oxidizing. I'd still compare the quality of the food coming out compared to what is in the bag. Fats tend to oxidize fast in open air environments. Feel the food that comes out of the feeder and see if it has that oily feel that the food in the bag has. Royal Canin and Hills are using almost all resealable bags now to keep the air out. I recommend keeping food inside it's original bag and putting it inside an air locked container for storage. Preserve those good fats because that is where most of the energy comes from in the diet, along with essential Fatty Acids.

.

I have used feeders for many many years.
No puppy that I have started out on a feeder has had any problems.

only had one or two that I acquired at a older age have problems.

One thing when putting a puppy on a feeder is to open the flap on the feeder. Some pups are not as smart as others and they don't know to push the door open.

Good point about the fat oxidizing.

So Doc, any truth to the old school of thought that hunting a dog on a full stomach could lead to a twisted gut while running, jumping and treeing? I've always heard it and it made sense to me, so just always played it safe. Would love to hear your opinion.
