What did you do before Garmins?

I was on a hunt this past weekend, and on the first drop the dogs quickly got out of hearing. I was watching my Garmin to determine where my dog was and how far, when the icon switched to treed. I ignored it, because one, the Garmin's not always right, and two, I couldn't hear her to legally tree anyway!

As we're working our way around this large section of cut-over the Garmin is showing her at a half mile, and still shows her treed. I've now noticed the other handlers looking at their Garmins, but all of us are doing as we should, and keeping our mouths shut. Meaning, no one is attempting to "pitch" their dog. Finally the judge says, "hey guys, when we get where we can hear them, they may be treed, and not knowing who treed first, we're just going to split them."

I thought that was an honest and fair way to do it, and was glad that the judge, said something before we did hear them and it turned into a debate!

But here's my question... what did you guys do before Garmins? I'm thinking this is more of a question for the guys down South, where the dogs going "yonder" is much more common.

Did you guys just try to keep up with them, before they could trail out of hearing? If so, what did you do if they split up? Did you just call time out, and go driving around looking for them, and/or use your radio telemetry?

I'm assuming we missed out on scoring a lot of trees back then, because we didn't know where our dogs were??? Is that a fair assumption?

Dave as for me we just treed them when we heard them and if they got out of pocket, when hunt was over we rode around to try and hear them somewhere, which at times was half the night.

That makes sense, but what did you do if you couldn't hear them?

I've had a couple examples lately where our dogs got deep, well out of hearing, but since we all knew where they were, we agreed to head towards them, till we could hear them again. But in the "old days" before GPS we wouldn't have known where they were.

This was never an issue up North where the ground is flat, and the coon more plentiful, so it's a new experience for me. Up there, if a dog got quickly out of hearing there was usually a reason no one wanted to discuss, if you know what I mean! But down with dogs sometimes needing to get deep, and with Garmin in hand, I never realized the big difference. But then it dawned on me, if we didn't all know where they were, we wouldn't have just kept walking! I can only imagine, folks called time-out a lot more and went looking for them.

it was a pain when you couldn't find them. Lots of times it was go home and wait for one of the neighbors to call you to come get them. Always got them back, but it is much easier to take them home now.

Every night was different but most of the time we just walked the way we are going to hunt and hope for the best. After a while we would decide they have to be out of hearing and call time to find them. It really didn't happen that much.

Robert - I remember when I used to leave my jacket out, and come pick them up the next day! Of course, they didn't get as deep then, as they do now, and I just didn't know were they were until the day I could afford a beep beep system. Now it's like night and day!

Michael - do you think in general it doesn't happen that much, or do you think that our "modern" hounds have more "go yonder" in them? Of course, with this technology, maybe we don't lose the dogs we once did and so there's more of them or maybe now we can effectively hunt them... but that will start a chicken and egg debate!

I know before we had tracking systems period you didn't see many coons setting up period that the dogs didn't tree !!! But now I don't think these dogs hunt their ground well enough I think because we got off the tailgate and hunted with them !!

I live in FL with big block of woods and it happened a lot. We did something down here back then that is now not legal but them dogs would get across the country and we would get in the truck and dive around. It was never a good policy to agree on treeing your dog if you were to hear them when you got out of the truck. It was a good policy to give everyone say 15-20 seconds when the truck stopped and have their tree points split, if they wanted some of the tree. After that the clock on the tree started. Others could then do as they pleased.

What we always did when the dogs were found treed after getting out of hearing was split the tree points. It sucks, but sometimes that's the best way to handle it

You're right... I used to do a lot more walking in the woods. Now I do even more walking, but it's to the next woods!

This is the way we did it an if they got out of hearing we would climb the biggest mountain around and listen for them a deep hunting dog soon would be gave to the local dog trader or end up in a sink hole because we liked to coon hunt not dog hunt

We would usually walk the 8 out cause no different than now. A couple always left out barking. When the 8 caught them. We would call time and round them up. Then do it all over again

Our problem is we hunt some woods that are 15 to 20,000 acres of solid timber. Hard to get around to get them in there and even though it is flat as a board it is still easy for them to get out of hearing.

i been a pleasure hunter all my life when the got outa hearing we went in the direction last heard them get as high up and walk till we found them or wait till they came in now i got a garmin ain't figure it out yet only use it once i don't hunt in the summer

I have 28000 ac right above my house. You can start on one end and walk to other end without getting off it

Plus its mountains but we have rds that go out in it and some through it. Mine treed one night on a place. I could see her across river. Course no way shed leave it. 75 yards maybe. Had to pull all way around. Went to walking by by which way tracker said. Thus was about 11:30. Walked out to truck at 5:30am bout dead ha ha. Next time Im swimming. I can promise that.

Yep before beep beeps or Garmins this was what we had to do in rough terrain .

You should tried bear hunting before beep beeps and garmin I've had to lay my coat down in Many places too we burnt a lot and I mean a lot of gas I rember when I got my 1st tracking system it was about 20 years ago I borrowed money from the plant I work at ( boy I'm glad them days is over)
F&l 10 channel and 2 collars and I thought that was the stuff now I've a garmin and don't see how we ever made it thanks letting Me sure Chris McMahan from Burnsville NC.
PS. Our bear season opens on October tha 12th the longest two weeks in history

That's what I assume was the case... like or dislike Garmins, we're now able to score a lot more trees, than we used to. There's probably also, a lot less people getting scratched for delaying a cast.

The next question is... have we created a monster, with this technology??? Will we keep dogs, that we once wouldn't have?
