ODNR meeting on closing dog running in April
ODNR is proposing to eliminate the ability to run dogs on public lands during the month of April. As many of you know this would affect several big hunts in Ohio including the Nationals. So I am on the agenda to speak Wednesday night to the complete ODNR Board that will be deciding this issue. Next Thursday ODNR has set a public meeting for those to voice their concerns. Please take the time if you can to voice your opinion by attending or voicing your concerns. I will copy this thread and take it with me Wednesday.
ODNR
For the last 14 years or so I have enjoyed many hours of outdoor enjoyment at the Woodbury and Wills Creek state lands with many great folks from all over the United States. We travel to the Coshoctin, West Lafayette, Millersburg, Kill buck and Holmes Ville areas to pursue a chase of the abundance of rabbits the Ohio region provides for our country. As an avid beagle man and rabbit field trial person, I would love to see the ODNR consider leaving the law as it is currently. When we travel to the Central, Ohio areas there usually 50-500 of us assembled for an event, this brings Economic boost from fuel sales, hotel stays, food sales, visits to Wal-Mart n fast food areas as well as visits to the Amish regions, please continue to allow us to do these things during the month of April.

Hey guys and gals I think the whole family of ukc bealgers need to stand up and make our voice heard!!! Don't much matter what state you live in. Make a stand and make it a priority. We have met many great people from many different states that come to enjoy the public running. Hey DNR it could be a real economic factor if you think about it. As far as we are concerned, the running season should be extended not shortened.
I say leave the law as it is.With deer hunting leases taking over all the private ground it is extremely hard to find private spots to run and train our coonhounds. I use the public grounds a lot.why do they want to change this law?where is the meeting?

I agree it will create alot of problems for coonhunters to find spots to train there dogs and will hurt the competition hunts as well. What benifit will the ODNR gain from doing this? and where is the meeting and time i think it would be great if we all showed support on this matter.

This is going to make it tougher on Ohio Beaglers, Coonhunters and other Hounds People.
With areas building up and taking much of our running areas, many of us are forced into these dog training areas.
It amazes me that while Kentucky and Indiana are expanding hunting seasons Ohio continues to reduce Seasons.
The ODNR already seems to take the worst piece of land on state ground and call it the Dog Training area... Now you want to shut it down completely?
If this goes through many will not be able to enjoy they're hounds over the summer months.
This is just ridiculous and I would like to know what's driving this? Who's idea was this and what is the wanted end result?

ODNR Representatives
It has come to my attention that you are in consideration of closing dog training areas on state controlled properties within the State of Ohio.
I have been a resident of Ohio for all 60 years of my life. With that I have always paid my state and federal taxes, as well as have purchased hunting license most every year since I was 16 years old. It is those taxes that I paid along with the many other fine folks residing in Ohio that provided the revenue to purchase these state owned properties. I feel like at this time the ODNR is considering discriminating against me simply because I choose to utilize those state properties by allowing my coon hound to practice chasing a raccoon up a tree.
I would RESPECTIVELY ask that you please reconsider this proposal. With Deer hunting leases now controlling a high percentage of the private land here in SE Ohio, public properties are fast becoming the only properties available for those within our ranks that are NOT independently wealthy.
I was under the understanding when these properties were being purchased that they we being set aside for ALL folks to enjoy. Please do not squash out the hunting traditions of those within our state that are at or below the poverty level.
These folks cannot afford a hunting lease and are now being forced to rely on public land for their outdoor enjoyment.
Your deer populations are not being affected nearly as much from people running their hounds on public properties. The drop in deer populations is largely due to the HIGH number of coyotes and now with the increasing number of bobcats to our area. So please do NOT penalize us for the surge of these predatory numbers.
Thank You for your consideration of my position!!

I live in the state of West Virginia but have attended more than one field trial that has used the state lands to run casts. The loss of the UKC Beagle Nationals would hurt the economy of the Coshocton area. I don't think it would be possible the run this trial without the use of public lands. I urge anyone that makes use of this land to voice your opinion on this matter.

I utilize Tri-Valley, Woodbury, and Dillon public hunting areas to train and condition hounds for field trials and hunting as well as guiding casts to good spots with abundant game in these wildlife areas; to be pursued for scoring opportunity. The restriction of being able to use Wildlife areas in April will make it extremely difficult for Coshocton County Beagle Club (C.C.B.C) to find enough private land places to guide for trials and conduct a good event with enough game to be pursued to make it an enjoyable event. With the increase of Deer hunting leases I have lost several great places to condition and train dogs let alone hunt for small game during hunting season which forces me to rely on public hunting and, the extremely limited dog training areas of Tri-valley in the closed season. This act will result in consequences for those of us who enjoy these grounds during the month of April. I'm sure Dave McVay can/will throw out some numbers of past hunts and explain in detail why these grounds are so important to us during this time period for multiple reasons both on an individual basis and for the Ohio beagle/Coon Hunters clubs.

I too depend on public ground for training dogs. Without it I and a lot of others wouldn't be able to run. I would hope the state reconsiders this proposal! Like others said the loss of the Nationals would be detrimental to Coshocton County Beagle Club. It seems that every day we loose more ground to high paying leases so keeping the training ground open would be appreciated.

This change would be terrible for Ohio! Every April Coshocton is packed with beaglers for the Nationals. We pack the restaurants, hotels, and gas stations along with other tourism spots your state offers. Please leave the seasons as is.

I am opposed to this change. I've had the privilege of meetings with the ODNR with very great success. With this closing, it will be very ditremental, to Coshocton County, our city and hotels and restaurants. This would be a great loss also for the Coshocton County Beagle Club. So I'm asking you to please reconsider.
Thank You,
Max Thornsley
Dear DNR Council members
I am writing to express my oppostion to the proposed rule change. As a houndsman, deer, and turkey hunter. I greatly appreciate the public lands Ohio has to offer. Access to private lands gets more difficult every year. This leaves public hunting land as many sportsman's only option to enjoy time afield with thier canine hunting companions. This rule change appears to be aimed at eliminating access by one user group to benefit another. Is eliminating dog trainig in Sept., Oct., and Nov. next to accomodate bowhunters? To the contrary, this board should be restoring and implmenting new dog training areas at all public lands possible throughout the state. These lands were established for the benefit of all. I respectfully urge the Council to do the right thing by keeping our public lands open to all sportsman to enjoy our passions.
Sincerely,
Kenneth M. Walter

I have hunted or pursued rabbits on state hunting land sense 1987 and I have enjoyed every minute of it!! I really dont see what there is to gain from this other than abunch of upset houndsmen!! This bill would deal a devestating blow the town of coshocton and its hotels restraunts merchant stores ext.... around the month of April!!! I enjoy all this states public hunting and do my best to preserve it!! Without these grounds to run in april this could potentially cause the united kennel club to deter from alowing the hunting beagle nationals to be held in coshocton and frankly this would really suck!! So please reconsider this bill and consider the cause and effects it will have on all of us thank you for reading this post!!!

I have been pursuing rabbit chases with hounds for 11 years now and the use of the public grounds have aloud me to enjoy a hobby that I love. It would effect a lot of tax payers that enjoys the same hobby and it would also effect the economy of Coshocton county in April do the UKC Nationals being held. I'm asking the ODNR to please drop this issue and leave it as it is thank you.

I contacted odnr a few weeks ago and had a good talk with a board member. The DNR needs to hear our thoughts and also solutions. There needs to be more dog training areas in the state, especially if public ground closes any earlier than it does currently. Also I would like to know what will happen with turkey hunting? Since the early closure deals with nesting birds what about Turkey hunters moving about the woods hunting and scouting for turkey? Just a thought.

Proposal Tabled
I attended the Wildlife Council meeting this morning. The proposal has been tabled at this time due to the heavy response of dog handlers. The majority of input was from the beaglers. It will be revisited in January under a more formal format with some changes.
