Red told me in 1984---

"When picking a pup take the one with a little white on their chest, they make the better tree hounds"

And you know, my hardest tree hounds had that small patch---Cheta II, Jenni Jo and Northern Joe XIII to name a few

So don't worry about the little white but I don't want white from their throat to their belly!!

It's all preference. Personally I would almost seek it out rather than avoid it. Best hound I've had had white tips to her toes.

Not a big deal

Some white is not a big deal to some. Some prefer solid red.
Myself it doesn't matter either way. Most important, is getting a pup from coon treeing parents.

A quote from the breed standard found here ( http://www.ukcdogs.com/Web.nsf/Bree...onhound01012011 )

"COLOR

Solid red preferred, small amount of white on brisket or feet not objectionable.

Disqualification: Albinism."

Breed for ability, choose ability, the color doesn't tee coons brother.

It all depends on what you want to do with your dog/pup. Do you want to make a bench show dog out of him/her? Do you want to try to breed him/her and sell pups? Or do you just want a dog that can tree coons? Everyone is different. Some look at that breed standard and see, "small amount of white is not objectionable". Others look at it and see, "solid red is preferred". It is kinda like, "is the glass half full or half empty"?

I got to hunt with woodpecker. He had a couple white toes an white on chest if I remember correct. I'm positive on the toes. The guy carried a red sharper an colored them. White don't stop them from treeing coons.
