pup taken from kennel

Woke up this morning by a knock on the door some kind guy had my young hound said he was hung up on fence in his yaurd. I was puzzled at 1st wondering how he had got out. I found out fast how. My kennel door was wide open. I have never in my life had a hound able to open up a kennel with the latch system that are on a kennel. I live in a very small town with 80% of all yaurds fenced in and after searching and no luck. I beleive some low life got into my kennel and took my pup while my older hound ran out. It has been 8 hours now and not 1 word on my pup. My 7 year old son is crushed as it was his pup me im mad as hell about this

I have a Walker that is now 2 years old...he is without a doubt one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen. I would have bet money that no dog could defeat a chain link kennel latch...that is until I owned this dog. Funny thing is that when he first figured it out he would not let me see him trying to open it. The only way I would know he was out was that the other two would bark in protest...they are not smart enough to let themselves out.
I don't know if we are talking about the same style latch, but when I first built my kennel I started out with those u shaped ones that just flip down over the pipe. He would be waiting for me at the front door of my house...that latch was a joke to this dog. I went to Lowe's and got one of what they call a "kennel latch." Little flat sheet metal thing that has to be lifted level to be able to flip over and release...that one confused him for about a half a day.
I had to make a block so he couldn't raise the latch and get out. One thing about it, if he let himself out you will know soon enough. That is if he hasn't got out already!!!!!

First photo is the U style...pretty easy for any dog to get out of...even a bluetick can do it. I even put a brass snap on it and he still got out within the hour!!!

This is the "kennel latch" you can see the culprit in the background...

Here is the blocker I made out of an old bolt some pvc pipe for a spacer and a kennel pipe clamp. He cannot defeat this one.

I have one with the first latch you described. What I did was tweak that gate panel so to open the latch you have to lean into the gate to take the pressure off the latch. If there wasn't a latch the way the panel is tweaked the gate wants to almost spring open. You put the latch on and there is no way a dog is going to open it.

latch

all you need to do with those kind of latches is to snap a lead snap in the round hole on latch, that keeps the latch from being able to open until snap is removed. also sorry to here about pup missing, hope it shows up somewhere.

Yep, it sure does stay until it's removed...it took my dog just about an hour to unsnap and "remove" it...

That's what mine are too I have had many over the years that can unlatch one I use a dog leash snap in the hole . When they do it once they don't forget .

I have both latches on my kennel,Just one bigger kennel,,50x150 but I have 4 doors on it,,never had a dog get out untill I got my tequila female,,smarter than a whip,,if I don't put the PADLOCKS on she will have the door open before you can blink your eyes,,lol,

If nothing else, dogs have definitely gotten smarter in the last 20 years or so...I never had escape problems back then. Will they be able to pick locks in 20 more???
But we're kind of getting off track with the OP's post...good coon dogs are very valuable. I don't think it is unreasonable to have a camera with a DVR watching a kennel 24/7. I would also suggest to everyone out there that has dogs and has no choice but to leave them unattended for times when they cant be around, take pictures, and get them chipped, tattooed. Freeze brands, although out of style, for solid color dogs is even better.
I had redbones years ago and had one stolen. Local dog catcher {perfect cover!!} was involved. I got the dog back but the sheriffs dept. could not make an arrest. The judge said simply, "don't bring this into my courtroom." When I later made an inquiry as to why, he told me that "a jury could not be expected to render a verdict either way when all the dogs of the breed look the same to them." That was when I made some freeze brands and learned how to do it. Tattoos can be scrubbed out, chips can be cut out and collars with tags throw away...but that freeze brand cannot be altered even by someone that thinks they can...you can always tell.

I have never owned a dog that didn't easily learn to open the kennel latch at a very young age. Have to keep a lead snap in it at all times.
