Parents

Has anyone else noticed that most coonhound owners/handlers are just like parents. Some of them expect a lot more out of their dogs than others. Some of them want their dogs to be well mannered and some just don't care. Some want their dogs to be "perfect" and some will accept many imperfections. Some believe that "if you spoil the rod, you spoil the child/dog". And some believe in "non-violent" punishment and some believe in "time outs". Have you ever heard a trainer/handler say that you need to just "stand up" a dog for a couple of weeks when they are doing wrong? Some read all of the books on parenting/training and some just go by what they feel is right.

And some expect a lot more out of someone elses dog than they do their own. I mean that they will minus your dog in a heartbeat but not their own. They will tell you everything that is wrong with your dog but refuse to admit that their dog does any wrong.

And some will expect a lot more out of a dog that belongs to someone else or that they did not raise/breed themselves. Kinda of like expecting a lot more out of a stepchild than one of your own.

When you draw out with 3 other people in a nitehunt, everyone has different expectations of how the dogs should behave/act. I think that is what causes a lot of the problems and different rule interpretations. The next time that you go to a kids sporting event, just look around you and watch/listen to all of the parents. It might sound just like some of the nite hunts that you have been on.
