Expectations
Thought this would be a good topic and would like to hear others opinions.
What are your expectations of a young dog between the ages of 6 to 12 months old?

I want them to go hunting, trail and tree. They may not be consistent yet or may have some improving to do on accuracy but I want them to show me something by 12 months. They'll get better with accuracy and consistency between 1-2 years old. If they tree right or wrong I want them to stay and be confident about it.

If hunted and given a chance if they don't run and tree by 9 months down the road. Giving them a chance has to happen but 9 months old is old enough too me, better be treeing his own coon well before a year old as well. I have not said I was sorry on one that I have culled using this standard and will keep true to it. Hell if you work a mutt you can get them to do this by 9 months old, if hunted and worked with!

They better be full of fire and want to chase game just because one will get on a tree and tree because the other dogs are doing it or a dead coon is hung up for them to look at doesn't mean anything it's just a good way to make them me2ing idiots

Home of those with drive!
Speak the truth it will set you free.
I want a smart pup that has a high prey drive, is able to grasp simple concepts and has noticeable natural ability. In other words they don't need to tearing it up wonder pups. But they should understand training to teach good manners, loading leading and riding quietly. They should naturally want to hunt and show interest in scent and trailing. My experience is they should be easy barkers. If they want something they bark. As a rule dogs like this put things together in the long run.
I am more concerned with solid finishers. Early starters are exciting but nothing is more disappointing than a flash in the pan. I can tolerate a pup with the above traits that is not wonder dog as long as they show steady progress.

I want to see desire to hunt, winding ability, and the brains and personality that wants me to be around the dog so that I can spend enough time with it to get it trained. I always remember a kid that when I was growing up was going to be the next wonder athlete. He could do more on a basketball court or a baseball field at 8 years old than the rest of us but fizzled out by high school. He went from the star to sitting on the bench by high school. Dogs can be the same way.

It all depends on if I have done my job. My job is to bring them along at that young of an age and be carefull not to push them along. The main thing I want to see is steady progress even if it is slow still steady forward progress.
As stated before we all love those that are burning up the woods at 8months old ,but most of the ones I have had like that were burnt out by 2yrs old. It is hard not to push one like that but I know what normally happens.
So to answer your question treeing an easy coon on a fairly consistant basis is what I would like to see by 12months.

Brian- Some good points...but you may not have done your job because its 110 degrees outside...
Here in the DEEP South the time of year plays an important role.... I think you do more harm than good on these 100degree days/nights messing with a young one.. I have one in the Kennel that I want to take so bad I can't hardly stand it, but I have learned in the past to be patient...its so much easier to get good results when the woods don't feel like an oven on broil...plus my good hunting is unhuntable during the summer due to snakes/gators... It's not going to hurt the pup, only my pride that I won't be able to say she ran and treed at 5 months old. I'd rather swallow my pride and wait.
Simple kennel manners can que you in some on a pups maturity level... If one keeps stomping in his/her own poop- BAD sign. Once they learn to use the bathroom at the opposite end of the kennel from their feed and to not stomp through it all day lets me know the pup is maturing and maybe more ready to push....
When a young dog has learned to watch the squirrels in the nearby treeline, or is treeing on the butterfly in his kennel, makes me want to take them out.
Not to say I don't hunt in Summer, but it slows WAY down and I hit mostly the scattered and seldom comp ($) hunts.
In summary, I don't judge what a dog is doing at a particular age, because the weather to, me is more important... I prefer a 11-12 month old going into November, the start of my good hunting, and I expect that pup to steadily progress.
A 5 month old going into winter may be a little young yet, and will be 15 months old the following November.... with the 11-12 month old window I like being in the bad training months.
I would imagine it is similar for the Guys in the extreme North... When the pup is at the perfect age they may be snowed in for three months making a "late starter"..

in your opinions...
Do you choose to put a full hide season on a young dog who has all the pieces but a few? before you send them on or to Jesus?

Personally, I have never set dates for when dogs should or have to be doing something. I Have seen pups that started very young and turned out to be pretty good dogs. I have seen quite a few that if the owner went by a deadline the puppy had to be running and treeing many of the best dogs I have ever known would have been given up on.
We also have some very hot summers here...for some reason it gets as bad as Florida in the summer here so depending on the "timing" of the puppies birthday some have better weather to get started in.
I have three young dogs in my kennel right now that are a perfect example...the oldest is 2. He started running tracks when he was around 8 or 9 months old. He ran and treed his first coon by himself at 13 months. He is not hardheaded about junk but needed some correction.
The next one is a female that literally ran and treed the first night I put her in the woods...like 6 months old. She has been doing it ever since and is the best tree dog I have. She is now 1 1/2, has been pretty hardheaded about deer and the other night she snapped at a dog at the tree. I am not real happy about that because I know I may not ever stop it.
The last one is 14 months old and the time thing kind of got him. We had a lot of rain here this spring and early summer...seems like every time it was time to go hunting it rained...or it was hot. He is just now showing some interest in coons and his training will begin in earnest just as soon as it cools off a little.
The last one is a nice dog, very loud and bred right and he has seen some deer run away right in front of him. I yelled at him and he did not pursue them.
Bottom line is that it's more up to how long the trainer/owner is willing to stick it out than putting a deadline on a puppy. It might be a mistake to mess around too long with a dog that just isn't gonna make it, but it is definitely a big mistake to quit on a pup too soon. I am more concerned with things like how long it takes to get them to stop chasing unwanted game, if they seem to be learning how to work out a bad track and how accurate they are when they do finally settle on a tree over when they start.
