-- Help with pup please! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928426924)
Help with pup please!
I just got a 6 week old pup about 4 days ago. The pup wont shut up for anything. You can smack him on the butt and put him in his pen and 2 mins later he is back to yepping and whinning. Even when you let him outside to run his is still yepping and whinning. Really want this pup to stay around but my wife is about to kill me cause of him. Is there any tricks or methods to get him to quite down?
If he's that bad about barking after four days I think I would take him back and get the quiet one...if there is one. Hyperactive dogs that bark constantly are a nuisance and usually don't change much. I have never seen one amount to the fantastic dog everyone hopes they will be. Sorry, wish I had more encouraging words....
Don't worry though, in a few minutes someone will post a "simple, all ya gotta do"....never worked for anyone before, but they are sure it will work on this dog!!!

Six weeks is too young to take a dog from their mom. I never let any pups leave before 8 weeks.
Best bet is to put it in with another dog if you have one. Pups that young need more attention whether it's from a mother or siblings. More dogs are ruined by people trying to make a buck letting them leave early than anything else.
Honestly you see this more with "coonhound breeders" than any other breeds. "Tree Huggers" suggest 12 weeks because of the pups development but 8 weeks has always been right for me.
For a better balanced dog, dog psychologist recommend 49 days. No more no less.

I need one. I think that several of my dogs have some very severe psychological problems. One of my young dog's mother was very mean to him and rejected him. It might have scarred him for life. I have another pup that is smaller than all of his littermates and they all bully him around. I worry that he may be psychologically scarred for life. I wonder if dog psychologists have doggie couches?
I've seen stuff animals work to get them to quit crying. Lol spray him with water if u can. Works faster in a pen where they can't get away. If u don't give up on him he won't give up on u. Can be tough to break. I'd say every hounds men has had this problem. Matter of fact I know they have. If u can get me a puppy that don't whine I'd have 10 of them.

It definitely happens...and I am not saying they don't do it for the money. Coon hounds typically have big litters...sometimes it is for the benefit of both the pups as well as the mother to take them off of her as soon as they get eating solid food, or at least as soon as possible.
One of my coon hunting friends had a Plott female that threw some really nice pups. She was bred 3 times and had 14 puppies every time. She came near to dying until he got the puppies off of her the first litter.
Point being, not all pups are taken early from their mother for the money. Still, I agree many are, especially in this sport.
As far as the OP and this pup in question...it really depends on how long you are willing to hang in there. It might turn out to be the best dog ever...but if he's still barking after four days continuously...it is sounding more like there's a better than average chance he might end up just another kennel pacing, barking mad, slick treeing idiot.
One of my friends had a house dog that she thought had a problem. The problem was actually HER and not the dog, but she would not believe that, so she hired one of these "certified" & credentialed "Dog Psychologists" to come to her home & work with her dog.
For the record, yes, they DID use her couch !!!
To make a long story short, after several visits & well over $2,000.00 in fees, the Dog Shrink quietly informed her that "some dogs never change", and it's just part of their make-up. She then told my friend that this was her last visit, because there was nothing more she could do.
Tell your wife that super-star pup is just barkin' at a coon outside of the pen...
Try a 2 liter filled with warm water. Acts like momma or another dog. Idk it's worked for me

Should have bought 2 . Anytime I don't have other little ones around I get 2 . By around 6 mo you will know which one you like the best and sell the other . Young pups do better in groups work together and one on one w/ training till old enough to hunt then one at a time .

I went to UT. The only thing that I learned up there was how to party and get in trouble. But then, I only lasted about 3 quarters before they sent me back home.

I agee with Blusk , to me that is to young to take fom mom . If I get a pup thats on the noisy side i'll put it in with a good natured older hound .
I met Smokey at a frat party once. He and I shared a beer. I also woke up with a girl one morning that might have been related to him. Some of those remembrances are a little fuzzy now.
Thanks for the replies. My pup is doing alot better and has calmed down alot on his yepping and whinning. He just needed some tough love! And more time to adjust to being alone.
