Walker pup help
I've got about a 17 month old walker male. He's out of witch doctor. When I take him out he runs like hell for a bit but won't ever strike. I've shown him two caged coons and he goes absolutely nuts and won't let me pull him off. I've turned both of them loose and he treed them about as well as one could expect.
If We are out Huntin he will run for close to a hour and then just put himself back in his box.
I've tried runnin him with other dogs but he won't run with any at all.
Anyone got some advise?
I would try feeders. Dump him on a few hot tracks.
young dog
shut the door on the box so he cant get in.lol he will keep hunting till he comes across a good hot one . or send him up north for 60 days in heavy coon population call me a 419 569 7162 if interested in sending him north

Well I took him to a lot tonight to get him on some feeders. About 9 o'clock I shined a feder and seen two coons. Took him down and turned him lose he ran 10 yards in the woods. Right were the coons had been. Stopped turned and ran back to the truck had the tailgate up and he jumped up on top of the dog box.
Fought with him like that till 10:30 when I finally gave up on him
you ever shock this dog ?or has it had a bad experience some dogs it screws all up they are so tepramental.this dog has mental blocks and is shutting down sounds like ,and maybe a little laziness going on.if they dont have confidence and drive at 17months i would ask myself why i am hunting this dog?you could try dragging a dead one behind the truck or four wheeler to see if that encourages it .good dogs can throw culls so just because he is out of a certain dog doesnt mean squat.
I have shocked him maybe 3 times to get him to come too me when we first started runnin him. At first he would never come back he would run for hours and stay at least 100 yards out. Now he won't do a dang thing
He also had a Black and Tan get ill towards him about 2 months ago now that I think about it.
Is there anyway to bring the hunt out of him and get his mental blocks out of the way or just a lost cause
Sounds like he had the hunt and you took it out

I wouldn't shock him unless he was gettin to the roads. So I'd just call him back.
dont hunt him with a shock collar he has gotten collar smart on you let what happens happen. people will ruin a dog quicker with a shocker because of not knowing how to properly use it. then they wonder why the dog is the way he is. take shocking collar off and start all over again.

yea he should get better as long as you hunt him hard right now without it. most dogs got a good built in honing device ( called there nose ) they will find you. let him hunt till he comes back without any influence. or catch him at tree. i prefer to pull mine off of tree period. good luck !!

Like a new hound
He has blown my mind these past few nights.
With that collar off he is finally clicking.
Hunted on Saturday and he was non stop. He struck about 12 times on the night and finished the track out 7 times.
We'd get back to the truck he'd take him a drink and he'd take off like a rocket he'd hot the woods and 5 min later he was striking in again.
He'd pull off the tree but just lack of confidence yet. He got better as the night went.
A few more nights like that, and once kill season opens and he gets his mouth on one I believe I won't be able to pull him off a tree.
I sure as heck can't believe the difference on how he hunts without that shocker.
Thanks yall for all the advise and input!
glad to hear you didnt give up on him. a good season should do him wonders. keep him in the woods!
