Tire Size Question

Getting new skins for the Tundra. Hated that last set of Coopers. Going back to BFG which I had 6 sets of and always liked. My question is in regards to tire size.

OEM calls for 265-70-16. My last few sets have been 265-75-16. They fit but were snug. I don't understand it but the 75's are $200 cheaper than the 70's?

I'm considering going to a 245-75 or a 235-85. I'd like better performance in deep snow on unplowed roads for cat hunting, etc. Will the 245-75 be a noticeable improvement over the 265-75? Will the 235-85 be too tall for my wheel well or too narrow to be a good all-around tire?

The wide tires tend to skate around worse in the snow and ice, but they do better in mud.

A quick lesson for you on the tire size( which you may already know). Most guys in tire shops don't even know how the sizes work. The first #(265) is the width in Millimeters. The second number(70) (sidewall height) is the percentage of the width. And everyone know the last number is the rim diameter in inches.

Here are the specs.

Height Width
265/70/16 30.61" 10.43"

265/75/16 31.65 " 10.43"

245/75/16 30.47" 9.65"

235/85/16 31.73" 9.25"

I wouldn't do a 245 75 16 because it is over an inch shorter, so on the highway you are going to run a higher rpm to mantain speed, so you gas mileage will be a little less. The 235 85 16 is very close to the same height as the original tire size, but over an inch skinnier- shound be descent snow traction. The only problem with that size is most of those tires are load range E so they are expensive and overkill for a light truck like your tundra.

Your best option for the money is 265 75 16, but if you can find a good deal on the 235 85 16(eBay has four with shipping for $693), go for it.

Get the bfg All terrains- the best all around tire... I have worked at 4 mechanic shops and seen lots of tires, and I used to 4 wheel all the time. BFG'S CONSISTENTLY LAST LONGER!! Before you buy the tires, check at discount tire direct online or ebay. sometimes you can save some serious $$$. I hope this helps

Firestone Destination MT's is all i'll run on my truck. These tires are freakin sweet, do good in Mud and takes awhile to wear out. I have a 265/70/17 on my truck. I like them and will never buy a different brand of tire.

I love the BFs but havent bought any in a while. They pretty high dollar lol. Im almost ready for a new set myself on my good truck. Thinking of lifting it a few inches and putting them on it. As far as which works best in snow. I have no clue. I live in Ga

Great info. Thanks!

Yeah...snow is a different ball game in regards to trucks and tires. When you are miles from the plowed road and nobody can get in to help, you better have the best set up possible! It's fun though. Gets your heart pumpin' when you got it floored in 4 wheel and your barely moving with a long way to go. lol My old BFG AT's always did good in snow.
