Question for Allen,

At a recent nite hunt, I was asked to guide our 3 dog nite ch. cast on my hunting lease. I had been sick the day and night before. After arriving and shining the first tree (where 2 dogs were treed), I became very weak and came close to passing out. With the 3rd dog trailing some 400 yards away, we cast back to him. They all treed, but I just could not continue on to the tree with the rest of the case, I was too weak. I wasn’t left alone, a spectator stayed with me. They handled my dog for me at this tree. After getting some fluids in me, I was able to catch back up with the cast and finish the hunt. My question is, should I have withdrawn or scratched for not making it to the second tree? Other than that, we had a great hunt.

I had seen this question the other day when you posted it and was waiting to see Allen's response myself. Here's my take on it;
I don't see that situation as being any different from using a back up handler which is something I've only done once so I'm not really fluent with the rules for doing that but I do believe once the back up handler goes in he's supposed to finish the hunt I don't think your really aloud to be switching back and forth. So my thought is you were OK to let somebody take over as handler but you probably should have been a spectator for the rest of the night.

I think rule 8-D covers this situation. It states clearly that if you cannot complete the hunt, you must pick up your dog (withdraw) or another handler (backup) can complete the hunt for you. So going by that rule, at the point where you could not complete the hunt and not having a backup handler, your hunt was over right there. Short of finding a way around that rule, I think that settles it.

Big country. I commend the people in your group for handling the situation like men. And using common sense to move on with the hunt. You guys did what was "right" whether or not it was inline with all the rules.

As for jims comment about your night being over. If more people would act the way this group handled this situation. The hunts wouldn't be dying out with less and less participants. If people still acted with honor and integrity, we wouldn't have so many rules.

lets face it. The sport is dying due to overly complicated rules, loss of land, and people to proud to help out others trying to get in on the sport.

By rule you probably should have picked up your dog. Unless you had a back-up handler that could have finished out the hunt for you. You doing ok now?

I took it he was wanting to know what the right thing was by the rules. My mistake.

I would have gave the same answer Jim...the right thing to do is never wrong. I will add this: one of the biggest reasons that attendance suffers at many hunts is because of people making up rules as they go along because it "seems like the reasonable thing to do" or "that's how we handle it..."
Rules is rules, if you cannot follow them or you believe there are "too many rules" then find a new hobby with less.

this is 2015 people not 1984, this is a world of video games cell phones and teenagers vaping or whatever the heck they call it, technology is why the younger generation isnt filling in behind you older guys and you aint gonna change it no rule changes are going to affect it
